WASHINGTON, DC: Former president Donald Trump made a significant contribution by endorsing retired Navy Captain Hung Cao in the closely contested Virginia Republican Senate race.

"A Combat Veteran and Highly Decorated Special Operations Officer, Hung Cao will be a tireless fighter to stop inflation, grow our Economy, secure our Border, strong support our incredible Military/Vets, and defend our always under siege Second Amendment," Trump said on Truth Social on Sunday, May 26. "Hung Cao has my Complete and Total Endorsement," the former president added.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 19: Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the media at the end of the day during his criminal trial as jury selection continues at Manhattan Criminal Court on April 19, 2024 in New York City. Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records last year, which prosecutors say was an effort to hide a potential sex scandal, both before and after the 2016 presidential election. Five Republicans, including Cao, are running to unseat Democratic incumbent Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, which is a heavily Democratic state that elected Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin in 2021.

According to a Washington Post report, Scott Parkinson, a former adviser to Florida Governor and Trump primary rival Ron DeSantis, is probably the most formidable opponent facing the Navy veteran in the race. Parkinson has raised the second-most money among GOP contenders so far.

Rounding out the field of Republicans is attorney and author Jonathan Emord, lawyer Chuck Smith and business owner Eddie Garcia.

Hung Cao has outpaced his rivals in fundraising so far

Cao, who in 2022 ran an unsuccessful campaign in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, has far outpaced his rivals in fundraising so far, bringing over $2 million, more than double the $841,000 raised by Parkinson, according to Fox News.

Although Cao has raised a substantial amount of money, the Republican opponent is still far behind incumbent Kaine who has raised $13 million since 2019. Additionally, Kaine has no opposition in the Democratic primary.

Significant political obstacles are making things worse for Cao; the Cook Political Report gave the seat a "Solid D," indicating strength for the former running mate of Hillary Clinton. In the 2020 Virginia presidential contest, President Biden easily defeated Trump by a margin of 10 points.

At the age of four, Cao fled Vietnam and arrived in the United States. He expressed his gratitude for the former president's support as he attempted to defeat his rivals in the Republican Party. "I’m honored to receive an endorsement from the 45th and 47th President of the United States Donald Trump!" Cao said in a statement on X. Virginia is set to hold its Republican Senate primary on June 18.
