NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Senator Elizabeth Warren sharply criticized President Donald Trump following his remarks in his recent interview, where he urged Republicans to get tougher.

His response came amid a prolonged government shutdown and growing partisan gridlock, as he pressed his party to take a harder stance while the Democrats accused him of neglecting ordinary Americans.

Warren slammed Trump for his remark on his exclusive interview for CBS’ ‘60 Minutes’ where he said, “You know what? The Republicans have to get tougher”.

“Get tougher on who? The woman with malignant melanoma?” Warren asked in response during a show on MSNBC. She continued, “Get tougher on the man with type one diabetes that they are struggling to control?"

She went on, "Get tougher on the guy who had a massive heart attack and nearly died in his early fifties, and needs continuing care? Exactly who does this billionaire president want us to get tougher on? “

She continued, “Because it's sure as hell not the billionaires that he wants anybody to get tougher on. It's sure as hell not these giant corporations that are making big contributions, so he can knock down the East Wing and build a gold-encrusted ballroom."

She added, "It's not the people who show up at some Great Gatsby Party.”

“Get tougher on our brothers and sisters, our neighbours or cousins, the people who will suffer because the Republicans are determined they would rather shut down than just offer a little continuing help."

She concluded by saying, "We’re not asking for anything new. It's just a little continuing help for the people who need it.”

As the ongoing government shutdown continued, and frustration grew among lawmakers, Trump once again urged Republicans to adopt a more hardline approach.

The president repeated his wishes in his latest exclusive interview, saying, “The Republicans have to get tougher. If we end the filibuster, we can do exactly what we want. We’re not gonna lose power,” he told Norah O’Donnell.

Congressional Republican leaders have said there is no intention to scrap the procedural measure. House Speaker Mike Johnson called it the “safeguard” in the upper chamber.

With the two parties at a standstill, the shutdown, now in its 34th day and approaching its sixth week, appears likely to become the longest in history. The previous record was set in 2019, when Trump demanded Congress give him money for a US-Mexico border wall.
