What did Deborah Roberts upload on Instagram?

Roberts uploaded a photograph showing a stack of books on a table, which stood beside a glass filled with clear liquid, plenty of ice, and lime slices.

The books were all copies of 'Lessons Learned and Cherished: The Teacher Who Changed My Life,' which was released by the television star herself in the middle of the previous year.

In a text insert on the image, she clarified that the drink was not a cocktail, as she was undertaking Dry January. "Reflecting on the year with my club soda. #dryjanuary," wrote Roberts.

What is Dry January?

The Time Magazine defines 'Dry January' as "a month-long feat to be sober."

It was officially launched in 2013 as a campaign by the organization 'Alcohol Change UK,' a charity that "focuses on reducing the harm caused by alcohol in society."

However, the origin of the practice can be drawn back to 1942, when Finland followed “Sober January” to help in the war against the Soviet Union.

Back in 2023, 15% of adults in the United States, which is more than 260 million Americans, pledged to practice Dry January.

Deborah Roberts' sober pledge comes in light of her husband's health crises

Reberts' husband, 69-year-old 'Today' star Al Roker, has been suffering from various health problems over the last couple of years.

Roker had a second knee replacement surgery in May 2023, after having the first one in April 2022. Since his first, Roker has tried to walk every day, reported The Sun.

It had been a tough year for Roker in 2022, with him being twice hospitalized for blood clots in his legs and lungs. He had to take leave from the morning show as a result and only returned in January 2023.

Roberts also took a temporary sabbatical from her show to support her husband.

She later stated, "As Al and I have talked a lot about his health struggles and just what we all went through over the last few months I think he's come to realize - and so I have - just how stressed I was, I mean how stressed we all have been. When you go through something life-threatening like that it is really really a stressor."
