Matt Rosendale gets blasted after he says IVF 'morally wrong' and calls for defunding fertility treatments
WASHINGTON, DC: Republican Representative Matt Rosendale made a contentious statement calling IVF "morally wrong" and announced a proposed amendment to the Department of Defense (DOD) Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2025.
Rosendale shared a post on X on June 26 with the caption, 'My amendment to the FY25 Department of Defense Appropriations Act.' The post read, "Amendment #112 defunds assisted reproductive technology that includes any infertility treatments or technologies including IVF to ensure human life is protected."

Rep Matt Rosendale says IVF is 'morally wrong'
The DOD extended its guidelines for IVF treatment in March to cover qualified veterans or military members who are unmarried or in same-sex partnerships. Since Roe v Wade was overturned, the department has implemented a number of new policies regarding reproductive care for service members and their dependents.
These policies include granting leave and providing reimbursement to individuals who must travel outside of their home state to receive fertility treatment if their home state has outlawed the procedure.
Rosendale said in a statement shared by his office, "While I feel for couples that are unable to have children, the practice of IVF is morally wrong, and I refuse to support any legislation that condones its use."
He added, "My amendment will strip funding for this practice, which is responsible for the destruction of life to the tune of hundreds of thousands of children a year. If you are opposed to abortion, you should be opposed to the practice of IVF, which destroys twice as much life as Planned Parenthood yearly."
The Alabama Supreme Court's decision in February that frozen embryos used in IVF treatments are legally protected as children under state law thrust the topic of IVF into the public eye. The state legislature eventually overturned the decision.
Since the overturning of Roe, federal GOP politicians have found it difficult to define their position on defending IVF and other problems about reproductive health care across the country. Research indicates that concerns over women's health and access to abortions may harm Republicans in November's general election.
