WASHINGTON, DC: North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis joined fellow Republican leaders in expressing concerns about former president Donald Trump’s association with far-right activist Laura Loomer, referring to her as "crazy."

The remarks came on Friday, September 13, amidst a growing controversy over Loomer's offensive comments about Vice President Kamala Harris, which have sparked bipartisan condemnation.

Sen Thom Tillis criticizes Laura Loomer’s divisive remarks against Kamala Harris

As Donald Trump enters the final stages of his presidential campaign, Laura Loomer's inflammatory tweet about Kamala Harris, which made a derogatory reference to her Indian heritage, has escalated into a seemingly huge political issue.

Loomer’s tweet claimed the White House would “smell like curry” if Harris were elected, drawing harsh criticism from both sides of the aisle.

In response to the controversy, Tillis, 64, who has served in the Senate for nearly a decade after defeating Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan in 2014, took to X to express his disdain for Loomer.

“Laura Loomer is a crazy conspiracy theorist who regularly utters disgusting garbage intended to divide Republicans,” Tillis wrote.

“A DNC plant couldn’t do a better job than she is doing to hurt President Trump’s chances of winning re-election. Enough,” the senator concluded, per The Hill.

Tillis’ remarks follow similar statements made by other prominent GOP figures, including Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Laura Loomer's response to criticism from Republicans as she continues to stick beside Donald Trump

Despite the widespread criticism, Laura Loomer continues to travel with Donald Trump and has remained involved in his campaign, although she holds no official role.

Over the weekend, she accompanied Trump to the first Republican debate in Philadelphia and was seen alongside him at September 11 memorial services in New York and Pennsylvania.

Loomer, 31, who is known for her incendiary right-wing rhetoric, has faced backlash in the past for controversial remarks, including suggesting that 9/11 was an "inside job."

She responded defiantly to the criticism, stating on X a day ago in a long post, writing, “The American people deserve people who fight instead of cowering in fear of the media.”

She dismissed the rebuke from GOP leaders, saying, “I don’t care about what they or any sellout member of Congress has to say about me.”

Donald Trump defends Laura Loomer amidst growing controversy

When asked about the increasing pressure from Republicans to distance himself from Laura Loomer, Donald Trump defended her, and described her as a “strong person” with “strong opinions," reported NBC News.

During a press conference, Trump said, “She speaks very positively of the campaign . . . I can’t tell Laura what to do.” He also called her "a free spirit' and "a supporter."

“Laura has been a supporter of mine. Just like a lot of people are supporters, and she’s been a supporter of mine. She speaks very positively of the campaign. I’m not sure why you asked that question,” Trump told reporters.

"I don’t control Laura. Laura — she’s a, she’s a free spirit. Well, I don’t know. I mean, look, I can’t tell Laura what to do,” Trump added on Friday.

Donald Trump's continued association with Laura Loomer infuriates supporters

Social media users reacted strongly to the ongoing controversy, with some speculating on the nature of the former president's relationship with Laura Loomer.

One user on X claimed, “Aren’t they officially dating now? It is what I keep seeing on social media.”

“She’s also a regular passenger on Trump Force One, and a regular guest at Mar-A-Lago, and regularly...canoodling with Trump himself all over the place. So...maybe YOU aren’t the Republican anymore. You certainly aren’t the one in power. Laura Loomer is," one accused.

“None of this would be an issue if you, as a Senator, voted to impeach Trump either of the times you had a chance. Why didn’t you?" asked one.

"Maybe, just maybe, Donald Trump who loves Loomer so much, is also a 'Crazy conspiracy theorist who regularly utters disgusting garbage,'" remarked another.
