WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Thom Tillis has called on President Joe Biden’s cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment following the president's weak debate performance which featured shaky and incoherent statements.

The debate performance has raised concerns among both Democrats and Republicans just months ahead of the November election, according to The Hill.

What is the 25th Amendment?

According to the 25th Amendment, the vice president and a majority of the cabinet can declare a president not capable of discharging his official duties, allowing the transfer of presidential powers to the vice president.

If the president serving his term disputes this, Congress will be able to decide on the matter. It would require a two-thirds vote in both the Senate and House to give the vice presidential powers.

In a letter to the Senate GOP conference, Tillis, a member of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky) leadership team, explained the importance of discussing Biden’s ability to serve as “a necessity.”

He argued that if the president does not step aside voluntarily, the cabinet should intervene.

In the letter sent to members on Friday, June 28, Tillis wrote, “If Biden cannot speak coherently, articulate his policies, and is unfit to perform after weeks of preparation, how will he perform when America is truly tested by a national security crisis, the kind of historic, high-stakes test his predecessors have been confronted with?”

“I believe Biden is a decent man who cares about the country. However, time catches up with everyone, and it’s clear his decline is more dire than people realized and the White House has not been as truthful nor transparent as it should have been,” he continued.

“Biden is unfit to continue serving as leader of the free world. While he is already well on track to lose the election in November, a lot can still go wrong between now and January 20, 2025.,” Tillis added.

The North Carolina Republican stated that Biden is unfit to continue his term and should step aside “for the sake of the country.”

“If he is unaware of his own unfitness to continue serving, the Biden cabinet should consider invoking the 25th Amendment, in which the cabinet can vote to transfer powers and authorities from the President to the Vice President,” wrote Tillis.
