WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Chip Roy has set off a political firestorm by urging Vice President Kamala Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Joe Biden from office, as reported by The Hill.

The call came after Biden's faltering debate performance, which Roy argues shows Biden is unfit to carry out his presidential duties. The move has sparked a heated debate among both parties and the public.

Chip Roy calls on Kamal Harris to remove Joe Biden following debate performance

Roy's resolution, introduced on Friday, June 28, urges Harris to convene the Cabinet and declare Biden unable to perform his duties. This comes in the wake of Biden’s debate performance, which many critics say highlighted his cognitive decline.

"I intend to put forth a resolution calling upon the @VP to immediately use her powers under section 4 of the 25th Amendment to convene & mobilize the principal officers of the Cabinet to declare the @POTUS is unable to successfully discharge the duties and powers of his office," Roy penned on the social platform X.

The resolution states that Biden "has repeatedly and publicly demonstrated his inability to discharge the powers and duties of the Presidency, including, among others, the powers and duties of the Commander-in-Chief".

However, it is important to note that the resolution merely expresses the House's sense and does not compel any action from the Vice President or the Cabinet.

During a press conference on Friday, Roy emphasized his concerns, stating, "Anybody with eyes and anybody observing objectively last night saw an individual that is not capable of carrying out the duties the commander-in-chief in a world in which we’re, you know, facing increasing dangers."

Roy continued, "For those of us who follow this stuff internally, it has been very clear the declining status of the capacity of the president, but last night put it all out for all to see. Our colleagues on their side of the aisle can’t hide from it."

House Speaker Mike Johnson echoed Roy’s sentiments, suggesting that Biden’s Cabinet should consider his removal. However, Johnson acknowledged that the decision ultimately lies with the Cabinet, as mandated by the Constitution.

"Unfortunately, it’s not the House that gets to determine that, it’s the Cabinet under the Constitution, of course, it’s the Cabinet that makes that decision," Johnson remarked.

Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, which has never been used, states that if the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet or Congress deem the President unable to carry out the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President should assume the role of Acting President.

Notably, Harris defended Biden’s debate performance, acknowledging a "slow start" but asserting that he had a "strong finish" and effectively contrasted himself with former President Donald Trump.

Chip Roy's resolution to invoke 25th Amendment sparks debate online

Roy’s resolution to invoke the 25th Amendment ignited a wave of divided reactions across social media.

One Facebook user stated, "He needs to be impeached for lying about his mental fitness. His health is our number 1 national security threat."

Another remarked, "Biden should be in a nursing home, or home care. That was quite apparent last night."

A third user wrote, "In a sane country that hadn't descended into madness, this would have been done 3 years ago."

Another user posted, "About the only positive thing you can say about Biden's performance is that he stayed on his feet for 90 minutes."

Conversely, some users criticized Roy's stance. "Republicans are so scared of Biden beating Trump again," one user wrote.

Another defended Biden, saying, "Joe is old. He speaks slow. Moves slow. But he understands the questions. Answers them. Provides context, knowledge, shows he understands international affairs. He is coherent."

A seventh user commented, "The Trump cult ignores the fact that everything that came out of Trump's mouth last night was a lie."

Lastly, a user said, "Chip, your candidate Trump is a national traitor with a fully diagnosable personality disorder."
