WASHINGTON, DC: Republican Sen Shelley Capito offered a fresh update on Saturday, July 25, about Senate colleague Mitch McConnell's condition, saying she had been told the longtime Kentucky lawmaker is "clear-minded" and recovering at a rehabilitation hospital.

Her remarks come more than a month after McConnell was hospitalized following a fall, as questions continue to grow over his prolonged absence from public view.

Shelley Capito gives Mitch McConnell recovery update

Capito, 72, was asked by reporter Nicholas Ballasy whether she had heard anything about McConnell's condition after weeks of limited public updates.

"I mean, I think, obviously, the public information, the information that I have, is that Senator McConnell is recovering and is, uh, healing, and is in a, uh, rehabilitation hospital," Capito said.

She added that someone who had recently visited McConnell told her the senator remained mentally sharp.

"I talked with somebody yesterday who visited him, and said that he's clear-minded and he just needs to get stronger."

Capito did not identify the person who visited McConnell or say when the visit took place.

When asked whether she planned to visit him herself, the West Virginia senator suggested she would wait until the timing was right.

"I think, you know, anyone who's been in the hospital or in a rehab facility, um, being visited, I think, is a pretty sensitive topic." She added that she "might wait until he asks for visitors."

Questions persist over Mitch McConnell's health

McConnell, 84, has been hospitalized since June 14, when his office said he suffered a fall that briefly left him unconscious. His staff later said he had not experienced either a stroke or a heart attack.

However, details surrounding the incident have remained under scrutiny.

A publicly available EMS dispatch call from the day of the incident reportedly included a dispatcher calling in a "cardiac arrest," while a medic at the scene said CPR was "in progress."

Despite continued public interest, McConnell's office has shared very little about his condition.

On July 12, his staff released a photo showing McConnell in the hospital alongside his wife, Elaine Chao.

But the image itself became the subject of speculation after Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson said on Newsmax he had heard it might have been an "older photo," though he later walked back that claim.

Pressure mounts for Mitch McConnell health update

McConnell's office has maintained that the senator is continuing to recover while staying involved in Senate business.

His spokesman said that McConnell had been meeting with staff to discuss defense appropriations, foreign policy, the farm bill, constituent services, and federal grant requests for Kentucky.

Still, his team has not released any additional photos, videos, or made any public appearances since the July 12 image.

The lack of new updates has prompted calls for greater transparency from several public figures, including Kentucky Gov Andy Beshear, who has urged McConnell to release a short video or make a public appearance to reassure people about his condition.

Questions have also continued to surround McConnell's office.

Earlier this week, reporter Nicholas Ballasy approached the senator's press secretary, Stephanie Penn, seeking an update on the Republican leader's health. She did not respond to the questions.
