‘Grandpa’s the President!’: Lara Trump says her son was ‘starstruck’ by Donald Trump
WASHINGTON, DC: Lara Trump shared a personal family moment involving her son and President Donald Trump during an appearance on Katie Miller's podcast, describing how the child reacted with surprise and admiration after realizing his grandfather’s role in public life.
The conversation took place on the podcast episode 'What is it Really Like Being a Trump?!!?', where Lara spoke about how her children are gradually understanding the significance of Trump’s position while still experiencing him as a typical grandfather at home.
Grandkids react to Donald Trump’s presidency
Lara said her children are beginning to connect the idea that their grandfather is the President of the United States.
“I think they’re starting to understand a little bit more who he is, and I see my son being a little like—starstruck with him sometimes. And he’s like, ‘Wait a minute, Grandpa’s the president, that’s really cool.’ And I think before he was just grandpa, which I—I love so much,” she said.
She added that watching her children make that connection has been a special experience as they grow old enough to understand his public role.
“But it’s really cool to see my kids make these connections and be old enough to appreciate who he is in this time,” she added, noting the unique nature of their family situation.
Donald Trump’s relationship with his grandchildren
Lara also spoke about how Donald Trump interacts with his grandchildren, saying he enjoys spending time with them and often spoils them like any other grandparent.
“They kind of get them like hyped up, and then they give them back to you, and I feel like my parents do it, and my father-in-law is no different,” she said. She added that treats like candy and ice cream are often part of those visits, especially at Mar-a-Lago.
Parenting approach and raising children in public life
Beyond family moments, Lara also discussed raising children under public scrutiny and navigating life in the political spotlight.
She reflected on discipline and consistency in parenting, saying she believes in setting clear boundaries and following through.
“I see so many parents out there who give their kids direction, and they say they give their kids an ultimatum and then they don’t back it up,” she said. “You’ve got to be in charge and you've got to follow through on it.”
Marriage and life under public scrutiny
Lara also spoke about maintaining a strong marriage while living in the public eye, saying both she and Eric Trump continue to work on their relationship daily.
“Anyone who tells you it is a walk in the park is lying to you, but it’s so worth it because to have a partner there through the highs and through the lows, there's nothing better in life,” she said.
