WASHINGTON, DC: In a bold assertion during a livestream fundraiser with Oprah Winfrey, Vice President Kamala Harris reaffirmed her status as a gun owner and declared that anyone attempting to break into her home would face serious consequences.

“If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” she stated, punctuating her comment with her trademark laugh.

Harris’s statement was part of an effort to position herself as a "common sense" candidate on gun control. However, she quickly backtracked, echoing a familiar refrain from President Joe Biden.

“I probably should not have said that. My staff will deal with that later,” she remarked, as social media erupted, including condemnation by the National Rifle Association (NRA), which labeled her a “walking contradiction.”

Kamala Harris aims for 'common sense' image of gun control

Living in the heavily fortified Naval Observatory in Washington, Kamala Harris used the platform to discuss her views on gun control.

She advocates for stronger background checks and the reinstatement of a federal assault weapons ban. “Here’s my point, Oprah. I’m not trying to take everyone’s guns away. I believe in the Second Amendment,” she emphasized, defending her stance on gun control measures as “just common sense.”

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz advocate for common ground in gun debate

During the conversation, Kamala Harris recounted her experiences holding town halls at colleges, where she asked students if they had ever participated in active shooter drills during their schooling. “Almost every hand went up. It was bone-chilling,” she said, underscoring the urgency of the gun violence issue.

Both Harris and her running mate Tim Walz are gun owners and are committed to finding a middle ground in the ongoing debate.

“I think for far too long on the issue of gun violence, some people have been pushing a really false choice to say you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away,” she stated firmly.

"I'm in favor of the second amendment, and I'm in favor of assault weapons bans, universal background checks, red flag laws," she stated.

Kamala Harris blasted for her comments on gun ownership

Kamala Harris's bold statement about defending her home sparked a fierce backlash on social media, with users quickly challenging her authenticity as a gun owner.

"Real gun owners don’t joke around about shooting people because we understand the weight of that responsibility," a user tweeted.

"She has Secret Service protection," said a second.

"That’s actually the correct answer!" added a third.

"I'm going to call Bullshit on this. Find this to hard to believe," tweeted another.

"She'd prosecute you if you did that though," read a tweet.

"So phony!" chimed another.

"Cringe," said a user.

"I wonder if Oprah will still vote for her after this?! She looks horrified at Kamala's lack of brain cells," penned a user.
