CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: During the third evening of the Democratic National Convention, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) delivered a speech in support of Vice President Kamala Harris and compared former President Donald Trump to an ex-boyfriend trying to rekindle a relationship.

In a moment that elicited roars of approval, Jeffries likened Trump to a persistent threat who was rejected by the electorate in 2020 but failed to comprehend that rejection.

Hakeem Jeffries compared Donald Trump to an ex-partner who cannot move on, stating, “Donald Trump is like an old boyfriend, who you broke up with but he just won’t go away. He has spent the last four years spinning the block, trying to get back into a relationship with the American people. Bro, we broke up with you for a reason.”

Jeffries proceeded to enumerate a series of Trump's foremost achievements in the White House, criticizing each as a regression for the average American.

For example, the GOP's tax cuts were a "scam" that predominantly benefited the wealthy, according to Jeffries. He also stated that Trump's handling of the Covid pandemic was a failure for the country.

The assault on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, was described by Jeffries as an attempt by Trump "to destroy our democracy." Additionally, he accused the three conservative Supreme Court justices appointed during Trump’s term of having "destroyed Roe v Wade," thereby curtailing women's rights.

“We broke up with you for a reason,” Jeffries said. “Donald Trump can spin the block all he wants, but there’s no reason for us to ever get back together. Been there, done that, we’re not going back.”

Jeffries also praised President Biden, who withdrew from the presidential race amid pressure from numerous Democrats both within and outside of Capitol Hill. According to Jeffries, Biden "selflessly passed the torch" and will be remembered as one of the most successful presidents in history, as per The Hill.
