BROOKLYN, NEW YORK: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries doubled down on his support for President Joe Biden's reelection bid, claiming the incumbent could defeat former President Donald Trump in November.

Addressing reporters at an event on street safety improvements at Brooklyn schools, the New York Democrat signaled his endorsement was still for Biden, stating his answer had "not changed" over the last three weeks, according to NBC New York. Jeffries, who recently met with the 83-year-old regarding the future of his reelection campaign, did not disclose the details of their conversation and said the discussion would remain private.

Hakeem Jeffries says he sticking with Joe Biden as Democratic nominee

"President Biden, as I've said repeatedly, is our nominee," the House Minority leader declared. "He has a tremendous track record of success. He is one of the most accomplished American presidents in our history and he has the vision, I believe the ability, the capacity, and the track record to make a case to the American people that will result in us being successful in November," he said.

Jeffries' support for Biden came as his closest Democratic allies were reportedly isolating him and urging to him drop out of the race. For instance, the latest reports claimed former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi believed the incumbent would be unable to beat Trump in November. The 44th president purportedly forced his former vice president to reconsider running for a second term.

The New York congressman further stated that discussing support for a potential replacement if Biden withdraws would be hypothetical.

"We have the [Biden-Harris] ticket right now and we're going to support because the stakes are too high at this moment," he claimed. "What unifies us is the urgent need to vacate the extreme MAGA Republican majority in November and continue to do the business of hardworking American families," Jeffries claimed.

Jeffries also disclosed that he had not had a conversation with Rep Adam Schiff about his "rationale" behind the call for Biden's exit. On July 17, the California Democrat released a statement saying it was time for the octogenarian to "pass the torch," doubting his ability to win against Trump.

Internet mocks Hakeem Jeffries for supporting Biden as Democratic nominee

Social media users mocked Jeffries for being panicky and deciding to sit in a sinking ship as he reiterated Biden was the Democratic nominee amidst growing opposition against the incumbent's reelection run.

"This dude is clearly in panic mode," a user said.

"This guy doesn’t believe anything he says lol," another remarked.

"A loser supporting a loser...birds of a feather," joked a third user.

"Everyone wants to be the calm before the storm. It’s a good gig," read a fourth response.

"Titanic piano player tells us the ship is fine," another person quipped.

"Well I'll be danged. Hakeem Jeffries finally came out of hiding and endorsed President Biden. Lah de dah," someone else chimed in.

"What is he, the good cop and Pelosi the bad cop?" An individual asked.
