WASHINGTON, DC: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries asserted on Tuesday, February 24, that President Donald Trump should use his upcoming State of the Union address to apologize to Americans for allegedly failing to address the high cost of living.

Jeffries emphasized that the address represents a critical moment for Trump to account for the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, even as negotiations over a stalled Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill remain at an impasse.

Hakeem Jeffries, speaking to reporters at the Capitol, sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s economic record, arguing that the administration has allegedly ignored the financial struggles of everyday families while dismissing the affordability crisis as a “hoax.”

Jeffries stated, "Donald Trump should use this opportunity to apologize to the American people for breaking every single promise that he made. Particularly, his promise to lower the high cost of living on day one.”

He added, “We didn't set that standard; Donald Trump set that standard. And now he's running around the country claiming that the affordability crisis is a hoax. Nobody out there in America believes it's a hoax because far too many people are struggling to live paycheck to paycheck, cannot thrive, and can barely survive."

Hakeem Jeffries blocks DHS funding over immigration concerns

Legislative tensions are escalating as Democrats remain divided over funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which expired at the end of January.

Jeffries noted that communication with the White House has been nonexistent, leaving the department in uncertainty. He stated, "we believe immigration enforcement should be fair and just and humane, that's what the American people deserve, that's not what they're getting right now, and until that changes, the DHS funding bill is not gonna move forward."

Hakeem Jeffries slams Mike Johnson over SOTU boycott criticism

As the State of the Union approaches, questions about member attendance have surfaced, with some Democrats opting to skip the event entirely.

When challenged by Speaker Mike Johnson over the decorum of such boycotts, Jeffries rejected the criticism, accusing Republican leadership of surrendering its institutional independence to the president.

"But Mike Johnson and House Republicans are not in a position to lecture anyone about decorum, not with this president, who's completely and totally out of control in every way possible, has broken every norm, is corrupting his office, and is running a Trump cartel.”

He added, “And unfortunately, House Republicans have decided that rather than be a separate and coequal branch of government, they just run around focusing their attention on being a reckless rubber stamp for Donald Trump's extreme agenda."
