During the fourth night of his residency tour, Styles paused his performance to speak about the emotional impact of recent years. Reflecting on what he described as “big moments of life,” he added, “There were wonderful things that happened to me, and there were some difficult things that happened to me as well.”
He continued, “lost a couple of friends over the last couple of years,” with fans immediately believing he was referring to Payne’s death.
Styles further explained how those experiences shaped his outlook on life, saying the moments helped him understand how “hard” and “inspiring” life can be while making him appreciate “all of the things that life could be.”
The singer previously spoke more extensively about Payne’s death during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. Speaking candidly about grief, he said, “It's so difficult to lose a friend. It's difficult to lose any friend, but it's so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways.”
He also reflected on the pressure of grieving publicly as a celebrity, explaining, “I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with acknowledging how strange it is to have people own part of your grief in a way.”
Styles added, “I have such strong feelings around my friend passing away. And then suddenly being aware of a desire from other people of you to convey that in some way, or it means you're not feeling what you're feeling, you know?”

Reflecting further on Payne’s death, Harry Styles said, “I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great.” He explained that Payne’s death became “a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, 'OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?'”
He also shared how he believes loved ones should be remembered, saying, “I think the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest.” He then described Payne as a “super special person” and called the loss “really sad.”
Payne’s death in October 2024 sent shockwaves around the world. A UK inquest later determined that his medical cause of death was polytrauma, meaning he sustained multiple bodily injuries. Toxicology results also revealed traces of illicit substances, alcohol, and prescription antidepressants in his system.
Ahead of the first anniversary of Payne's passing, his family collected £250,000, approximately $336,000, in his memory to benefit children fighting cancer at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Fundraising efforts began shortly after his death, with fans encouraged to donate to the hospital instead of sending flowers.
According to the funeral order of service, the funds raised will support a new facility as part of Payne’s lasting legacy.
