NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA: In a recent interview, longtime Democratic strategist James Carville delivered a scathing criticism of his party's direction and President Joe Biden's remarkably low approval ratings.

The 79-year-old political consultant, renowned for his no-nonsense approach, didn't hold back as he dissected various aspects of the current political landscape.

Identifying issues with messaging

Speaking to The New York Times's Maureen Dowd, Carville, who gained national prominence for his role in President Bill Clinton's successful 1992 campaign, minced no words in attributing the Democratic Party's polling problems to what he termed as "too many preachy females."

He likened the experience of observing Biden's dismal approval ratings to "walking in on your grandma naked," adding, “You can’t get the image out of your mind."

Expressing concern over the party's focus on what he described as "woke stuff," Carville warned that such messaging could alienate ordinary Americans and potentially cost the party the upcoming election.

According to Dowd, Carville "complained that ‘woke stuff is killing us', that the left was talking in a language that ordinary Americans did not understand, using terms like ‘Latinx’ and ‘communities of color', and with a tone many Americans found sneering."

Furthermore, Carville highlighted what he perceived as a prioritization of ideological purity over electoral success within left-leaning circles. Carville told Dowd, "There are a lot of people on the left that would rather lose and be pure because it makes them feel good, it makes them feel superior."

Throughout the interview, Carville expressed frustration with what he viewed as excessive political correctness and a lack of pragmatism among certain segments of the Democratic Party.

"Who ever thought it was a good idea to tell people you can’t hug them or you’ve got to be careful or you’ve got to think about names to call them other than the name you know them by?" he asked. "There’s nothing wrong with me being White or you being White or them being Black or me being male or you being female."

"It’s a giant, stupid argument," he said.

Carville decried the tendency to prioritize identity politics over broader issues of concern to voters, particularly noting the potential impact on Biden's support among Black voters.

“A suspicion of mine is that there are too many preachy females” dominating the Democrats’ messaging, he told Dowd. “‘Don’t drink beer. Don’t watch football. Don’t eat hamburgers. This is not good for you'. The message is too feminine: ‘Everything you’re doing is destroying the planet. You’ve got to eat your peas'."

“If you listen to Democratic elites — NPR is my go-to place for that — the whole talk is about how women, and women of color, are going to decide this election,” he continued. “I’m like: ‘Well, 48 percent of the people that vote are males. Do you mind if they have some consideration?’”

In addition to critiquing the party's messaging, Carville offered his assessment of Biden's candidacy, dismissing concerns about the president's age.

“He’s a tenacious guy that’s had a real life. He’s a state school guy. He doesn’t have an iota of elitism. He doesn’t even know what ‘woke’ is,” he said. “I don’t think he can do much more than soldier on and let the Democratic groups kick in.”

Social media reactions

Following the publication of Carville's remarks, social media platforms buzzed with reactions.

"He's not wrong. Too bad if you don't like hearing from a Dem who knows how to win elections," one posted on X.

"First based Dem take in decades," another wrote.

"He’s half right; they are preachy but they don’t know what a female is," someone else quipped.

"Nope. Gotta have the open borders and gender stuff, plus a heaping helping of racial turmoil," a comment read.

"Gotta love watching the left eat its own," another remarked.
