TRENTON, NEW JERSEY: In a convoluted turn of events that could rival a Hollywood thriller, New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez's wife Nadine found herself embroiled in a peculiar incident in the spring of 2018.

Shocking revelations emerged detailing how her then-lover, lawyer Douglas Anton, had reported her missing to the authorities.

The mysterious disappearance

Nadine, at the nascent stage of her relationship with the senator, embarked on a covert vacation to the sun-drenched shores of the Dominican Republic, shrouding her escapade in secrecy.

Even her closest confidantes were kept in the dark about her whereabouts, as she slipped away unnoticed.

The circumstances surrounding her abrupt departure raised eyebrows, with Anton stumbling upon a cryptic note affixed to her door in her absence. The note, intriguingly typed rather than handwritten, hinted at her purported visit to a friend, leaving behind a trail of confusion in its wake.

"My love, I’m going away to see my girlfriend last minute as I need some time to de-stress. Be back Monday. Love you," it read.

However, what commenced as a seemingly innocuous getaway soon morphed into a cause for concern when Nadine failed to return as scheduled. Anton, increasingly troubled by her prolonged absence, reached out to her family and eventually involved law enforcement to initiate a missing persons report.

In a candid interview, Anton shed light on his growing apprehension as days elapsed without any sign of Nadine's whereabouts. "It wasn’t like her to do this, and days went by, so I went to the cops," he recounted to the New York Post. "I did a missing persons report, and they had to come to the house to check to make sure that someone didn’t kill her and put her in a closet," Anton explained.

At her residence, police discovered the lights and TV left on, heightening the sense of urgency surrounding her whereabouts.

The revelation and reconciliation

"On the flight back from the DR, she could not get on the plane and had to call for a government check," Anton revealed. "That’s when he [Menendez] first found out we were still ‘seeing’ each other on and off during the week when he was in DC. She later said he freaked out and was p-----," he added, alluding to the senator's reaction upon learning of their continued liaison.

Nadine and her future husband had jetted off to Punta Cana, DR, which is near Casa de Campo, an exclusive resort frequented by Menendez while visiting his former benefactor, Salomon Melgen.

In 2015, Menendez faced corruption charges alongside Melgen, but both were acquitted when the trial resulted in a hung jury.

While on the plane headed back to the US, Nadine contacted the authorities to report her safety and issued a directive for Anton to stay away from her. Her eventual return home, a week after her initial disappearance, culminated in a tearful apology to Anton, as she sought to offer explanations for her actions.

"She finally landed and blew up my phone, came right to my house to explain, crying and to apologize," Anton recounted. The ensuing conversation prompted Anton to probe Nadine's motives, to which she offered a cryptic explanation, "It was more about Bob wanting to be incognito."

Legal entanglements

According to NorthJersey.com, law enforcement revisited Nadine's residence for a subsequent check and allegedly discovered her in the company of Egyptian-American businessman Wael Hana. Hana is a co-defendant in the corruption case involving Nadine and Menendez.

Allegations have surfaced accusing Menendez and Nadine of colluding with Hana and others to serve as clandestine agents for the Egyptian and Qatari governments. They stand accused of accepting bribes, such as gold bars and luxury vehicles. However, both Menendez and Nadine vehemently deny these allegations.
