WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Ilhan Omar addressed reporters on Monday, September 29, after being asked about former President Donald Trump’s latest comments suggesting she should “go back to Somalia.”

Omar, a Minnesota Democrat and one of the most high-profile progressive lawmakers in Congress, laughed before calling Trump “delusional,” saying he needed help and was “obsessed” with her and her Somali heritage.

The exchange, captured in a widely circulated video, quickly spread across social media, where reactions underscored the polarized state of US politics.

Ilhan Omar was asked about Donald Trump saying she should go back to Somalia. She laughed at the remark, saying Trump “needs help” and is “delusional.”

She added that Trump is obsessed with her and Somalia, calling his fixation “frightening” and repeating, “I hope he gets the help he needs.”

During the press interaction, Ilhan Omar laughed before responding sharply to Donald Trump’s comments.

“He’s delusional. He needs help,” Omar said, adding, “He is obsessed with me and obsessed with Somalia. It is frightening. I hope he gets the help he needs.”

Her comments followed Donald Trump’s suggestion that Omar, a naturalized US citizen who immigrated from Somalia as a child, should “go back” to the East African nation.

The remark echoed similar language he used in 2019, when he directed comparable statements at a group of Democratic congresswomen known as “The Squad.”

A familiar flashpoint between Donald Trump and Ilhan Omar

The latest episode highlights the long-running friction between Donald Trump and Ilhan Omar.

Over the years, Trump has frequently criticized Omar, often tying his attacks to her Somali background or her progressive policy stances.

Omar, in turn, has regularly dismissed his remarks while framing them as part of a broader pattern of divisive rhetoric.

Observers note that such exchanges continue to underscore how deeply personal and pointed US political discourse has become, particularly as Donald Trump remains a central figure within the Republican Party and is widely discussed in the context of future elections.

Social media reactions reflect deep partisan divide

The clip of Ilhan Omar laughing at Donald Trump’s comments quickly made the rounds on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms.

Supporters of Omar praised her for brushing off what they considered inflammatory remarks, with many echoing her sentiment that Trump’s focus on her is excessive.

Critics, however, argued that her laughter showed a lack of seriousness in addressing an important issue.

The mixed responses highlighted the degree to which both Ilhan Omar and Donald Trump serve as lightning rods in the broader political conversation, drawing intense support and criticism in equal measure.

While Donald Trump’s remarks and Ilhan Omar’s response may seem like another familiar exchange between political adversaries, analysts say such moments resonate beyond the individuals involved.

The recurring themes of identity, belonging, and loyalty continue to shape political debates in America.

For Ilhan Omar, the controversy adds to her visibility as one of the most outspoken progressive voices in Congress.

For Donald Trump, the episode underscores how his commentary still drives news cycles and reactions from political opponents, even as he remains outside elected office.
