NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Speaker Mike Johnson took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to speak out against President Joe Biden's latest attempt to provide student loan debt relief on Friday, April 12.

The incumbent announced wiping out $7.4 billion in student loan debt in a move that would reportedly affect around 277,000 borrowers, reported The New York Times. Currently, the Biden administration has collectively forgiven $153 billion in debt for 4.3 million borrowers in the US.

House GOP members had earlier opposed student debt relief as unfair to those who struggled to pay back without federal assistance, with Rep John Moolenaar of Michigan stating, "You’re incentivizing people to not pay back student loans and at the same time penalizing and forcing people who did to subsidize those who didn’t."

Mike Johnson slams Biden's 'illegal' student loan policies 

Johnson shared a New York Post tweet on President Biden's student loan cancellation announcement, where POTUS is seen saying in a clip, "I will never stop to deliver student debt relief for hard-working Americans. And it's only in the interest of America that we do it... It's for the good of our economy. It's growing stronger and stronger ... by freeing millions of Americans from this crushing debt... It means they can finally get on with their lives instead of their lives being put on hold..."

"The national debt is $34 trillion. Inflation is making life unaffordable and this administration is now forcing the American people to pay the costs of student loans that borrowers willingly signed up for," the Speaker wrote in his post, adding, "Biden’s policies are completely backward and illegal."

The internet trolled the Speaker in response to his post.

"You give everything the Democrats want on a silver platter. Fraud!" exclaimed a user.



 

"Mike you handed the government EXACTLY what they wanted. The blatant hypocrisy is disgusting," echoed another.



 

"You are a disgrace and you should be embarrassed for selling out Republican voters. How do you people sleep at night? Honestly?" jibed a third.



 

"Dear Mike, stop the grandstanding! You refused to shut the government down on 3 occasion in your short time as Speaker, while funding Ukraine and Biden's extreme spending!" noted a fourth.



 

"Imagine being able to do something about price gouging and doing absolutely nothing but whining about it on Twitter," mocked a fifth user.
