Internet mocks Hunter Biden as his license to practice law in DC is suspended in wake of gun conviction
WASHINGTON, DC: In the wake of Hunter Biden's conviction on federal gun charges on June 11, his license to practice law in Washington, DC, has been suspended on Tuesday, June 25.
The DC Court of Appeals issued a terse order declaring President Joe Biden’s son is “suspended immediately” from practicing law in DC, according to The Hill.
Hunter Biden could permanently lose his law license
A formal proceeding to determine “the nature of the offense and whether it involves moral turpitude" will be initiated by the DC Bar's Board on Professional Responsibility, as per the terse order.
Lawyers must be disbarred if convicted of certain crimes. Until a “final judgment of conviction” has been certified, Hunter's license will likely remain suspended.
Following this, he could potentially lose his law license permanently.
Hunter Biden's gun conviction
Earlier this month, a jury of 12 Delaware residents convicted Hunter of three felony counts.
The 54-year-old's legal troubles stem from a 2018 incident involving the purchase of a Colt Cobra 38 SPL revolver.
He falsely checked “no” on the federal gun purchase form when asked if he used or was addicted to illegal drugs. He then unlawfully possessed the revolver for 11 days.
The gun trial brought renewed attention to Hunter's struggles with addiction, particularly his well-documented cocaine use, which has been openly addressed by both Hunter and his father Joe Biden.
Three women from Hunter's past, including his ex-wife and his late brother Beau's widow with whom he had a brief relationship, testified as part of the federal case.
He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and fines totaling $750,000. However, it is uncommon for first-time offenders to receive the maximum penalty.
Hunter's sentence will be at the judge's discretion and a sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
Hunter Biden's attorney requests new trial after conviction
On Monday, June 24, Hunter's lawyer Abbe Lowell requested a new trial on the federal gun charges, citing a procedural matter.
His attorney, Abbe Lowell, requested a new trial for Hunter Biden on Monday, June 24, citing a procedural matter.
The court filing claimed that the convictions “should be vacated” because the US Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit had not issued a formal mandate denying one of Hunter's appeals.
Lowell wrote that this procedural oversight means the verdict should be considered void.
Internet doubles down on suspension of Hunter Biden's law license
Reacting to the suspension of Hunter's law license, one user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "One day at a time."
"I'm surprised he had a law license!" a netizen commented while another user tweeted, "How in the hell is he a lawyer? Good grief," and another user wrote, "The circus show is over."
