TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis threw shade at former President Donald Trump at a recent rally by saying that Trump did not pardon the people who got caught up in the January 6 riots on his last day in office.

DeSantis rallied his followers and asked them, “And indeed, on his last day in office, you know, did he help the people that got caught up in the Capitol stuff that he told to go there to do? Any support for them? No!”

DeSantis has been on the offensive since his approval ratings have dropped steadily over the course of 2023.

Coming into 2023, DeSantis was red hot in the approval ratings chart, ranking second to former President Donald Trump.

But as Trump has consolidated his support in the run-up to the 2024 US general elections, DeSantis has slowly lost his charm among the GOP voter base.

DeSantis’ presidential campaign takes a nosedive

Despite not appearing for any of the four primary debates that were hosted by the Republican National Committee, former POTUS Donald Trump remains the top contender for the presidential nominee from the GOP.

On the other hand, since launching his presidential campaign in May 2023, DeSantis has been polling lower in his own home state currently. A new approval rating poll from Florida Atlantic University shows his favorability among his constituents being split, according to a report by Politico.

Speaking of favorability, DeSantis, once touted as the more sophisticated alternative to Donald Trump, is also steadily losing the backing of GOP donors to financially support his presidential campaign.

On the recently concluded fourth GOP presidential primary debate that was broadcast on NewsNation, GOP presidential hopefuls DeSantis and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy both accused former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley of being bought out by the Wall Street colossuses like JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock.

Haley in her response said, “And in terms of these donors that are supporting me, they're just jealous and wish that they were supporting them.''

This couldn’t have been more true since most of the Republican donor base had placed their bets on Nikki Haley off late, shifting their support from the Florida Governor.

The jig is almost up for DeSantis, and unless he can be forceful and go on the offensive before the start of 2024 to turn the GOP voter base to his side, all hopes seem to be diminishing for the current Florida state governor to see himself seated in the Oval Office come 2024.

Internet criticizes DeSantis for raking up past

People on X were not chuffed with DeSantis’ verbal jabs at the former president, with many reacting to his speech about the January 6 rioters as a way to garner sympathy towards his cause.

One X user said: “Anything for a vote."

Another user wrote: "DeSantis is going after the vote of the J6 criminals now?"

A user remarked: "This says it all about his craven pursuit of power by any means necessary. Could be as dangerous as Trump."

One user tweeted: "Competition in the GOP is like "Who is the most fascist""

Another X user quipped: "'Caught up in the Capitol stuff' is a funny way to say insurrection."

Finally, this user remarked: "Jeffrey Dahmer was a good guy except he got caught up in all that murder and cannibalism stuff."
