WASHINGTON, DC: A letter posted on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that former president Jimmy Carter has died has been confirmed as a hoax.

On Tuesday, July 23, far-right activist Laura Loomer shared the misleading post of an image of a letter that announced the death of Carter, 99, which went viral on social media, sparking widespread confusion and concerns.

The fabricated letter of the death of Carter who will become a centurion on October 1 was swiftly picked up by numerous media outlets and even fooled Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) who shared the fake announcement on X, expressing condolences in the now-deleted post.

Where is Jimmy Carter?

Both the Carter Center and Carter's doctor verified that reports of his death are false. While the former president's health remains poor, his status has not changed, reported the Daily Mail.

In February 2023, Carter has been under hospice care and for the past 17 months, he has been receiving end of life care at his home in Plains, Georgia.

He has been in mourning following the death of his wife Rosalynn Carter and was last seen publicly at her funeral in Georgia in November 2023.

Fake letter says Jimmy Carter's wife was a 'baddie' and 'the original Brat'

A closer examination of the letter reveals clear indication that it is "fake."

'Despite these successes as president, all his life Carter considered his marriage to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter his life's greatest achievement,' read the third paragraph of the letter.

"At her passing last November, president Carter said, 'Rosalynn was a baddie. Jill, Melania, even throat goat Nancy Reagan had nothing on Rosalynn. She was the original Brat," the fabricated letter continued.

Laura Loomer calls Jimmy Carter's death hoax 'gross'

Sharing an image of the fabricated letter in a now-deleted post on X, Loomer wrote, "Former president Jimmy Carter has died. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Following the realization of the hoax, Loomer condemned the fabrication as she tweeted, "It appears that the letter saying Jimmy Carter has passed away is fabricated."

"Gross. Why would someone fabricate a letter saying a president died?" she wrote.

"I have deleted the letter and I'm keeping president Carter and his family in my prayers. People should not post death hoaxes," Loomer added.

Internet calls Jimmy Carter's death hoax 'horrible'

As the fake announcement of Carter's death went viral on social media, netizens rallied to express their relief that the former president is alive and slammed the circulation of the fabricated letter that was widely reported and shared by media outlets and prominent figures.

"What a relief. Jimmy Carter is still alive and kicking, despite the fake news circulating around," a user on X wrote while another user tweeted, "This is horrible."

"Fake news spreads faster than truth these days its scary how easy it is to manipulate ppl online," a netizen commented and someone wrote, "This is cruel"

"Whoever did this should be as posed. So disgraceful," a user remarked while a netizen tweeted, "How little of a life do you have to lead to create something like this? Just pathetic."
