WASHINGTON, DC: After Michael Cohen "completely collapsed" on the stand last week, an attorney for former President Donald Trump claimed on May 19 that his defense team no longer needed to challenge Cohen's evidence, according to The Hill.

Cohen, the former president's ex-lawyer and fixer, testified in the hush money trial. During cross-examination, Cohen was questioned by Trump's defense team.

Trump lawyer claims Michael Cohen ‘completely collapsed’ on stand

Attorney Will Scharf said on 'Fox News Sunday', "Michael Cohen, I believe, has just completely collapsed on the stand under withering cross-examination by President Trump’s trial team. So, at this moment, I don’t think there’s any further need to call into question Michael Cohen’s credibility, because I think he has none."

It was anticipated that Cohen would serve as the lead witness for the prosecution in the hush money case, where Trump is accused of 34 felonies for fabricating financial documents.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 25: Former President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen arrives with his attorney Danya Perry at Trump's civil fraud trial at New York State Supreme Court on October 25, 2023 in New York City. Trump may be forced to sell off his properties after Justice Arthur Engoron canceled his business certificates and ruled that he committed fraud for years while building his real estate empire after being sued by Attorney General Letitia James, seeking $250 million in damages. The trial will determine how much he and his companies will be penalized for the fraud. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Pool/Getty Images)

Reimbursements to Cohen for a payment he made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an alleged affair were the main focus of the allegations. Trump has denied having an affair and entered a not-guilty plea to the accusations.

Fox News Shannon Bream questioned Scharf over the possibility of Robert Costello, Michael Cohen's former legal advisor, testifying. Costello said he believed he should be called to the stand and that the Manhattan District Attorney’s office was not interested in the damning evidence he presented.

Scharf predicted that Costello's testimony would deliver the last blow to Cohen's reputation. He said, "I think based on Costello’s public statements and also his testimony before Congress, he would absolutely undercut any remaining credibility of Michael Cohen and therefore, key parts of the prosecution’s case."

According to Scharf, the prosecution has not been able to "abjectly prove their case" against the former president thus far. He said, "I think any fair jury reviewing the record, would immediately and unanimously vote to acquit in terms of whether witnesses will be called, including President Trump."

He added, "That’s something that the defense team is going to have to think about after the prosecution rests. But as of now, to me this looks like a directed verdict or at the very least, an absolute acquittal just based on the prosecution’s total failure to prove anything, even approximating the crime."

Internet says Michael Cohen's credibility was always dubious

People on the internet stayed divided as Donald Trump's lawyer claimed that his defense team no longer needed to challenge Cohen's evidence.

A user wrote on X, "Really? More like the Trump team's case has collapsed" while one added, "Has Donald given up? Has no defense and too scared to testify?"

A person also stated, "That's not true at all.... Trump's lawyer was almost belligerent during cross examination of cohen" whereas one mentioned, "Cohen, the convicted liar."

A user also wrote, "Democrats and Joe Biden's cases against Trump are in shambles. I'd expect Trump to be declared not guilty this week" while one stated, "That's what they want you to believe, Cohen wasn't the only witnesses, pecker & Daniels & the secretary also made a strong statement of him being Guilty".
