NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: California Governor Gavin Newsom is doubling down on his efforts to slam Republican states over access to reproductive care and anti-abortion law, reported Politico.

Newsom shared a new television ad slamming Alabama, where legislators are trying to criminalize people who help minors travel out-of-state for reproductive care and abortion on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, April 21, 2024.

According to the publication, it is set to air the following day. Following the recent decision of the Arizona Supreme Court that made century-old abortion law enforceable, Newsom further announced his plans for a new legislation to make it easier for inhabitants of the neighboring state to get abortions in California.

Gavin Newsom's latest ad

Debuting on MSNBC’s 'Inside with Jen Psaki', the ad is part of a multistate campaign Newsom is paying for through his Campaign for Democracy PAC that rolled out in late February and is focused on the issue of abortion travel bans.

Titled 'Fugitive', it is aimed at a proposed bill in Alabama that would make it a crime for people who help minors get an abortion across state lines without informing a parent or guardian.

The dramatic work features two women driving toward the state border when they get pulled over by law enforcement one mile out. A voiceover states, "Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care."

The officer then asks the driver to step out of the vehicle and take a pregnancy test, after which she is seen getting her hands cuffed against her car.



 

Multiple Republican-run states, such as Oklahoma and Idaho, have moved to impose legal penalties and fines for transporting people seeking abortions in other states.

The Californian Governor, who is reportedly pushing for making his state a legal sanctuary for abortions, has said the conditions in those states are “much more pernicious than they even appear.”

Internet reacts to Gavin Newsom's ad

Internet trolls, mostly pro-lifers, took on the new ad after it was shared by Newsom on X.

"So I should believe that a cop will pull someone over and ask them to take a pregnancy test? 🤣🤣," wrote a user.



 

"I’ve never seen a cop pull someone over and ask them to take a pregnancy test, lol," echoed another.



 

"This is unhinged even for you," stated a third.



 

"This is total propaganda," commented a fourth.

"The 90s called and wants their fear video back," jibed a fifth.



 

"Give us a break. Oh my God, the fear stocking," expressed a sixth user.
