NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Democratic presidential candidate Rep Dean Phillips stood by President Joe Biden, describing him as a "decent man", following a special counsel's report that triggered a heated press conference from the President.

However, he called out the President for making “wrong decisions” by running again for the presidency.

Phillips appeared on Fox News' ‘Primetime' with Jesse Watters on Friday, February 9, where he discussed his rationale for challenging Biden, in what many perceive as an uphill battle.

Following this, Watters took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share his conversation with Phillips.

However, many people on the Internet bashed Phillips for his remarks.

Dean Phillips calls out Joe Biden for making ‘wrong decision’ by running again

Fox News host Jesse Watters took to X and wrote, “"This is tragic" - Democratic Presidential Candidate Dean Phillips says Biden needs to step down right now.”

Dean Phillips joined Jesse Watters to share his views on Joe Biden running for the presidency.

Phillips told Watters, “It was sad. You know, most patriotic Americans probably watched that press conference, saw a decent man and I want to really defend him. He is a decent man, and to have to get in front of the country and talk about his son Beau, defend himself from these charges, I thought it was a sad day.”

Special counsel Robert Hur, who conducted an inquiry into President Biden's handling of classified documents, wrapped up his investigation this week.

Although Hur did not file any charges against Biden, he noted that the President "willfully" maintained the classified documents from his tenure as vice president.

Hur’s reports stated Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory”.

After the report's publication, Biden held an impromptu press conference, expressing disbelief at the accusation that he does not remember his son's death, saying, "How in the hell dare he."

Phillips contended that the attention surrounding Biden's press conference and Hur's report would not be as pronounced if Biden was not seeking re-election.

He said, “I respect him, but that’s the problem. And by the way, Donald Trump? Not that far behind him.”

Phillips continued, “Seventy-seven percent of the country wants to move on from this chapter. We have two presidents — a former president, the current president, that frankly, people have lost faith in broadly.”

He said the country might have an opportunity at having a "next generation President".

Phillips also admitted that he was the first Democrat in July 2022 to call for Biden to “pass the torch".

He said, “I think he should be putting both his own legacy and the country, most importantly, ahead. And I think he’s making the wrong decision for both by running again.”

“I have been making that contention much to the chagrin of my colleagues as you well know. I mean I’m just saying the quite part out loud Jesse.”
