WASHINGTON, DC: Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said on Monday, March 4, that he was persuaded to run for the Senate after observing the overt influence of former President Donald Trump on the discussion of a bipartisan border deal last month.

The Republican Maryland Senate candidate said during an appearance on MSNBC, "It’s why I decided to run for Senate."

On February 9, Hogan announced his candidacy for the Senate seat held by retiring Democratic Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland. Due to the contentious character of Senate life, the former governor has previously denied any interest in holding a position in the upper house.

Larry Hogan says he didn't aspire to become a senator

Hogan said, "Actually, I had never given any consideration to this race. I’d said 100 times I didn’t aspire to become a senator. I didn’t need a job. I wasn’t looking for another title."

However, he added, "But three weeks ago on a Wednesday night, when I saw a real solution to secure the border and provide funding for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan — something that most of the Republican senators had said was, all those things were important, and they were told to vote against what they believed in — it made me frustrated and angry enough to say, I think I’m gonna go down there and try to do something about this."

Following Trump's criticism of the $118 billion border measure as a “great gift to the Democrats, and a Death Wish for The Republican Party,” the bipartisan group of senators and the Biden administration worked to discuss it. The package was ultimately defeated in a vote on February 7.

In an attempt to keep the border a contentious topic before the election on November 5, President Biden and other Democrats have accused the front-runner for the GOP in 2024 of organizing Republican resistance to the pact.

The bill included border security measures worth billions of dollars for Ukraine and Israel, and a Title 42-style authority that would enable Biden, 81, to close crossings if the average number of migrants encountered each day over one week exceeded 5,000.

The moderate, anti-Trump former governor charged that the Republican conference was home to "Putin sympathizers" and denounced the "new strain of isolationism in the Republican Party."

Internet trolls Larry Hogan for his statement

Several people on the internet criticized Larry Hogan for saying that he was persuaded to run for the Senate when Republicans killed the bipartisan border measure after Donald Trump told them to block it.

A user on X wrote, "If he is speaking about the bill which would allow thousands of illegal aliens into the US daily then he can be ignored. The LAWS on the books don't need to be rewritten. But we do need to know SPECIFICALLY what he wants to change in the current law. Don't think he will do that."

One user added, "Larry didn't read the bill. A great start for a 'law' maker."

Another person stated, "It wasn’t a border bill and everyone knows it. Biden had the power to secure the border without giving billions to Ukraine" while one wrote, "Hulk should stick to wrastlin."

A person also said, "The border bill was trash. Trump was correct to prevent the GOP from passing it."
