LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Late-night host Stephen Colbert injected his signature wit into the proceedings of Donald Trump’s criminal hush money trial in Manhattan, urging his 'Late Show' audience to temper their enthusiasm for the trial for a very specific reason.

After the start of the historic trial, which began with jury selection and witnessed the dismissal of several potential jurors due to partiality, Colbert amusingly urged his audience to tone down their applause.

Stephen Colbert's humorous take on jury selection and Trump's 'doze off' moment

“The official name of the trial is The People of the State of New York v Donald Trump. The people of the state of New York — that’s us!” Colbert exclaimed, eliciting enthusiastic cheers from his studio audience.

However, he quickly followed with a playful plea, “I know you’re excited, but don’t cheer too loud. We need you to get picked for jury duty.”

During the trial's first day, over half of the 96 potential jurors raised their hands, confessing their inability to remain impartial toward Trump. As a result, the judge promptly dismissed them. Not a single juror was successfully selected on Monday.

Colbert couldn't resist poking fun at various aspects of the trial's opening day, including a reported moment when Trump appeared to doze off. “Reporters noticed that Trump appeared to nod off a few times, his mouth going slack and his head drooping onto his chest,” Colbert quipped.

Stephen Colbert’s comedic commentary on Trump’s Stormy Daniels connection

“In fact, his lawyer passed him notes for several minutes before Trump appeared to jolt awake and notice them. ‘Oh my god, I was having the most terrible dream that I had to read something. Oh no, that dream was real, but if it’s real then where’s the hamburger with boobs?’”

In the midst of the levity, Colbert shifted his humor towards the delicate task of elucidating the trial's significance to future generations, particularly given its association with adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

“There was a president who met a special actress for let’s say grown-up movies at a celebrity golf event and invited her over for a playdate because his wife was too busy to play because she had a new baby, and the actress gave him a friendly pat on the bottom with a magazine about money with his photo on it,” Colbert carefully recounted, pausing for dramatic effect.

Social media reactions reflect a range of sentiments on Trump's trial and speech mishaps

Social media users have expressed a variety of reactions to the ongoing trial and its associated proceedings.

“And then they shared a special unprotected hug. Then he gave her a present so she wouldn’t tell anyone that his bathing suit area was shaped like Toad from Mario Kart.”

One user wrote, "Watching the people behind Trump squirm during his 'speech' was priceless!"

Another added, "If Trump can be convicted there, he can be convicted anywhere...it's up to you New York, New York."

One user replied, "Remember when Trump said Revolutionary War Troops ‘took over the Airports’ in his Fourth of July Speech?"

Another said, "Can you imagine what it's like to wake up in court, sitting in a warm pile of your own feces?"
