WASHINGTON, DC: Republican Rep James Comer of Kentucky voiced his support for the idea of pursuing criminal charges against Dr Anthony Fauci, former chief of the COVID response, over his testimony regarding the early Trump administration's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Comer accused Fauci of lying to Congress about the government's initial COVID response, particularly regarding the recommendation of maintaining a six-foot distance, which became a widely adopted practice during the pandemic.

“At the end of the day, if you lie to Congress, that’s a felony,” Comer said in an interview with Fox. “And when you look at the clip you just showed, everyone knows that Doctor Fauci was the lead instigator in the spacing distance.”

“This is something that not only shut down tens of thousands of businesses in America and ran the debt up as a result of having to subsidize those businesses that were shut down and have to subsidize the unemployment rate. It destroyed public education. Kids couldn’t be in school because of the six-foot social distancing requirements that Doctor Fauci championed.”

James Comer seeks evidence for probe into Dr Anthony Fauci's alleged misconduct

During Fauci's Monday testimony, his first under oath since leaving government, he faced intense questioning from Republican critics, including Comer, who have sought to hold him accountable for the challenges Americans endured during the pandemic.

In an interview with Newsmax, Comer expressed his hope that Fauci's testimony could serve as evidence for a criminal investigation against him. “Hopefully, we can take his words today and continue to try to gather evidence and take steps to try to hold him in criminal wrongdoing because I believe that the majority of Americans realize that Dr Fauci made costly mistakes, he’s lied about them and he’s tried to cover it up,” Comer stated.

Comer, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, has been involved in efforts to link Fauci to misconduct at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), where Fauci previously served as head. Despite Fauci's testimony that he was unaware of a senior adviser's efforts to evade public information laws, Comer remains determined to hold him accountable.
