WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President JD Vance reacted with delight to a now-viral Oval Office moment between President Trump and New York City Mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani, calling it an “all-timer.”

The meeting, charged with unexpected warmth, quickly captured national attention.

The first White House meeting between Trump and Mamdani drew widespread attention not just for its symbolic weight but for its surprisingly cordial tone.

The two men, who had previously exchanged harsh criticism, spoke before the press about shared concerns over New York City’s affordability crisis. Trump had repeatedly called Mamdani a “communist," while Mamdani had famously described Trump as a “fascist.”

During the press briefing, a reporter asked Mamdani whether he still believed Trump fit that label. As Mamdani began to answer, Trump jumped in with a lighthearted tone, saying, “That’s okay, you can just say yes. It’s easier than explaining it. I don’t mind,” while patting Mamdani on the arm.

Trump also joked about being called a “despot,” adding, “I’ve been called much worse than a despot, so it’s not that insulting.”

Turning to shared goals, Trump said, “We have one thing in common, we want this city of ours that we love to do very well.”

Mamdani noted that he appreciated the focus on mutual goals rather than past disputes. He said the meeting “focused not on places of disagreement, which there are many, and also focused on the shared purpose that we have in serving New Yorkers.”

JD Vance on Donald Trump’s comedic timing

Responding on X, Vance praised Trump’s handling of the moment, writing, “POTUS has a lot of good moments but this is an all-timer.” His comment underscored how unexpected and politically significant the exchange appeared, even among Trump’s closest allies.

Vance has also previously praised Trump’s sense of timing. Speaking at an event, he referenced another Oval Office moment during Trump’s November 11, 2025 meeting with Syrian President Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa. In that clip, Trump asked with a grin, “How many wives?” Al-Sharaa, momentarily surprised, responded, “One,” prompting laughter inside the room.

Reacting to the clip, Vance told the audience, “I don’t know if you saw this video circulating on social media.” He continued, “He was like, ‘Well, how many wives do you have?’ … what an amazing question. Amazing comedic timing.”

Vance added, “But there’s a lot of good humor in the cabinet,” framing the moments as examples of Trump’s disarming style in diplomatic and political settings.
