JD Vance reveals secret WH dress code Trump expects from inner circle: 'A very old-fashioned thing'
WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump may be willing to negotiate a deal, but when it comes to his inner circle's wardrobe, there's little room for compromise.
JD Vance recently revealed the unwritten dress code that the president expects his inner circle to follow, one firmly rooted in traditional professional attire.
The 41-year-old vice president shared the little-known rule during an appearance on 'Hang Out with Sean Hannity,' where he touched on a range of topics, including the Iran conflict, his tense interview on 'The View,' and his Christian faith.
JD Vance reveals Trump's strict dress code
Early in the conversation, Hannity jokingly urged Vance to ditch his tie, with both men appearing in matching white button-down shirts. “I'm sure the president will watch the show and will say, 'Why weren't you wearing a tie?' To the both of us,” Vance responded.
He then explained that Trump's strict fashion preferences are rooted in the belief that public servants should show respect for the institutions they serve through their appearance.
"The president has a certain sense that you ought to respect the place, you ought to respect the institution, respect the office. And one of the ways you do that is by dressing like a normal person," he said. "And I think that's, it’s a very old-fashioned thing."
Suggesting that the president expects his team to always project professionalism, Vance pointed to some of the rules, telling Hannity that Trump almost always wears a navy suit, black shoes, and a solid tie.
"Well, I mean, he always has, it's always a navy suit. It's almost always a solid tie. It's always black shoes," Vance said. "Like, he'll bust the chops of some of the Cabinet members if they've got brown shoes on."
Earlier this year, reports suggested that Trump had given administration officials “spiffy” dress shoes. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has been “gifting footwear to agency heads, lawmakers, White House advisers and VIPs.”
The article described Trump as having “fallen in love” with men's footwear company Florsheim's leather oxfords, which typically sell for $145.
Trump confirmed the reports on 'The Brian Kilmeade Show,' saying, “When they tell me they have a problem, I say, ‘Let me get you a pair of shoes.'”
JD Vance recalls Trump's jab at son
Later in the episode, Vance insisted that Trump never fails to comment on even his family members' attire.
Hannity then brought up an infamous White House exchange in which Trump took issue with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wearing military-style attire rather than a traditional suit.
“That was not a good moment for him. And it's funny because things kind of worked out. And I think, you know, we were able to repair that relationship,” Vance noted.
Vance then recalled a time when Trump called out his son, Donald Trump Jr, for wearing a “spread collar.”
"They're reading out the names. But there's, at one point, the president turns around and looks at Don Jr And Don has like, a spread collar on. And the president's like, ‘Oh, that's a pretty wide collar there, Don,’" the VP said.
"And you can tell, like, it just was absolutely a dig. So I've always, navy suit, black shoes and a conventional collar," he added.
