WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President JD Vance found himself in a precarious position after the College Football Playoff national championship trophy fell apart in his hand as the champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes, visited the White House on Monday, April 14.

As President Donald Trump was posing with the Buckeyes, Vance, an Ohio State alumnus, attempted to lift the trophy from the table where it was kept with the help of others.

In the video, which has since gone viral on the internet, the top shiny portion of the trophy can be seen getting detached from the black metallic base as the vice president attempted to lift it, as reported by The Hill.

JD Vance jokes about 'breaking' the College Football Playoff trophy

While the netizens were less than thrilled about the situation, the Republican attempted to lighten the mood by joking on his social media that since he didn’t want anyone to “get the trophy" after the Buckeyes, he decided to dismantle it.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the 40-year-old wrote, "I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it," referencing another post showcasing the exact moment.

This is, however, not the first time Vance has cracked a joke regarding the Ohio Buckeyes.

Previously, in January, he joked that he might skip the inauguration to attend the team’s title game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, as the College Football Playoff occurred on the same day as Trump’s second inauguration.

In the post, Vance quipped, "Hopefully everyone is cool with me skipping the inauguration so I can go to the national title game."

Vance later clarified that his post was made in jest and that he would "be there doing my constitutional duty and swearing in as the 50th vice president of the United States," as reported by The Hill.

Ohio State won 34-23 over Notre Dame in the January 21 game.

Internet equates JD Vance's trophy gaffe with the Trump administration

While JD Vance laughed the incident off, social media users were not that forgiving, as they deemed him to be the "least cool" vice president in American history.

One noted, "The best part is watching them all laugh at him!" and another said, "Least cool VP in history."

"Did VP JD Vance think the CFP National Championship Trophy was a DIY project he could just snap in half for the Ohio State team at the White House, or does he always handle delicate things with the grace of a linebacker?" a person asked.

Taking a dig at the Trump administration, one wrote, "Everything this administration touches has fallen apart so no surprise here!" "What a fitting metaphor for America right now," someone else echoed.

"That trophy is a metaphor for the US economy," a person quipped.

"Nice try, Boss Baby. If you knew anything about CFP you would have known the base is detachable," an individual pointed out.

One more, "Kinda like breaking the government so nobody else can use it?" and another person said, "That explains the stock market then. please stop touching things."

"You’re an embarrassment," one declared.
