WASHINGTON, DC: The US Senate has once again failed to pass a comprehensive border security and immigration bill

The legislation, which faced opposition from some Democrats and most Republicans, was voted down 50-43 on Thursday, May 23.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer blames Republicans for the bill's failure

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer acknowledged that he did not expect full support from his caucus for the bill before the vote.

However, he placed the blame for the bill’s failure squarely on the shoulders of Republicans and former president Donald Trump.

“We know that the status quo at the southern border is unacceptable,” Schumer said in a floor speech before the vote.

“If Republicans were truly serious about calling the situation at the border an emergency, they shouldn’t delay any longer," he added, according to the New York Post.

President Joe Biden accuses Republicans of indifference

In a statement following the vote, Joe Biden accused Congressional Republicans of indifference towards border security and fixing America’s broken immigration system.

“Congressional Republicans do not care about securing the border or fixing America’s broken immigration system," Biden said in a statement.

“If they did, they would have voted for the toughest border enforcement in history,” Biden said, adding "Instead, today, they put partisan politics ahead of our country’s national security."

He said by voting against the bill, they also “rejected an agreement that would give me, as president, a new emergency authority to temporarily shut down the border when the system is overwhelmed.”

He said that he’s “committed to taking action to address our broken immigration system.”

Biden also criticized the Republicans for blocking the bipartisan border agreement, saying they rejected legislation that would hire more Border Patrol Agents, add more immigration judges and asylum officers, and introduce new technology to detect and stop fentanyl from entering the United States.

House Speaker Mike Johnson calls for executive action

House Speaker Mike Johnson called on Senator Chuck Schumer to join House Republicans in demanding President Biden reverse course and use his executive authority to secure the border and protect American families.

“After more than three years of claiming the situation at our southern border was not a crisis while millions of illegals poured in, Congressional Democrats are attempting to throw an election year Hail Mary to cover for their embrace of President Biden’s open border policies,” Johnson said.

However, two of the lead negotiators on the initial bill — Republican James Lankford of Oklahoma and independent Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona — criticized Democrats for their “political theater” in trying to push through the measure.

“Today is not a bill,” Lankford said in a floor speech, adding “Today is a political messaging exercise.”

Internet reacts as Senate fails to pass border security  bill

The internet reacted to the bill’s failure with one user writing, “Clearly, the border is not an emergency if it can wait thanks to the crooked GOP.”

"Same old Democrat toothless garbage to give the appearance they care about the border when they for over three years have allowed over 10 million unvetted illegals storm our borders which was by design. Now, close to the election, they want to pull a fast one. GOP stopped it," another user wrote.

"Democrats are trying to pay their way through the elections," wrote one more. Yet one commented, "The Republicans own the border crisis."

"It wasn't a security bill," one impressed. "This bill is a scam, it would let in thousands every day. Dems are just pretending they're trying to fix things," wrote one more user.

However one suggested, "Republicans are failing the American people by showing they're more interested in the political theater instead of joining Democrats and President Biden in their efforts to fix the border dilemma Trump called on Republicans to kill the border bill. They are not serious."
