WASHINGTON, DC: White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates commended President Joe Biden's achievements, highlighting the president’s commitment to his agenda as he approaches the final leg of his term.

In a statement to the New York Post on Sunday, July 21, Bates highlighted the president's accomplishments and future goals.

White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates sings Joe Biden's praises

Andrew Bates recounted the dire circumstances President Biden claimed to have inherited: "President Biden inherited an economy in freefall, a skyrocketing violent crime rate, and alliances in tatters from his predecessor."

He then touched on Biden's apparent turnaround efforts, stating, "He turned that around to deliver the strongest economic growth in the world and the lowest violent crime rate in nearly 50 years, while making NATO bigger than ever."

Looking ahead, Bates outlined the administration's continued efforts: "He looks forward to finishing his term and delivering more historic results for the American people. That includes continuing to lower costs, create jobs, and protect Social Security while standing against the MAGAnomics agenda that would worsen inflation and drive us into recession. And he’ll keep fighting to protect Americans’ freedoms from radical abortion bans and attacks on the rule of law."

Bates’ statement on Sunday contrasted sharply with his earlier remarks to NBC News on Friday, where he dismissed rumors of Biden’s potential withdrawal: “That is not happening, period,” he asserted, adding, “The individuals making those claims are not speaking for his family or his team — and they will be proven wrong. Keep the faith.”

Joe Biden trolled over presidential record on social media

However, the Biden White House was trolled on social media after deputy press secretary Andrew Bates showered praise on the president's record.

"What record? Inflation, wars, gas prices," one posted on X.

"Oh yeah, I’m sure it will be a strong finish," another quipped.

"Yep. Record inflation. Record border invasion. Record number of cross-dressers on staff. Record number of failures," someone else chimed in.

"His record is abysmal. Look at our open border, crime, and inflation. That's just a few out of hundreds of bad policies," read a comment.

"If his record was anything to tout his party wouldn't have forced him out," another offered.

Concerns about Joe Biden's fitness

Amidst these discussions, questions regarding President Biden's cognitive fitness have surfaced. While the White House has maintained that Biden remains capable, moments of apparent confusion and public missteps have fueled doubts among officials and donors.

Some Democratic allies have suggested that Biden stepping down and elevating Vice President Kamala Harris could offer strategic advantages in a potential contest against Donald Trump.

Experts have weighed in on the debate about Biden's ability to serve. Ezekiel Emanuel, a bioethicist from the University of Pennsylvania, told the Washington Post, “The presidency is not a one-man show. It is an administration with the president as boss and ultimate decision-maker… and he has a very effective team around him that he knows, and they know him.”

Similarly, David Grabowski, a Harvard Medical School professor, distinguished between Biden’s current term and a potential future term: “President Biden’s decision to end his candidacy relates to carrying out his duties over the next four and a half years. From an aging and health perspective, that is different from his fitness to serve today through the end of his current term. The two must be evaluated independently.”

Biden's aides and allies, up until recently, were adamant that he would not withdraw from the 2024 race. However, Biden's lagging poll numbers in key battleground states, coupled with a shifting political landscape, complicated his reelection efforts.

Despite Trump’s own challenges, including public gaffes and meandering speeches, voters have shown more concern about Biden’s age. A CBS News/YouGov poll revealed that 72 percent of registered voters doubted Biden’s mental and cognitive health for the presidency, compared to 49 percent for Trump.
