WASHINGTON, DC: John Oliver took a comedic jab at JD Vance (R-Ohio) on 'Last Week Tonight', ridiculing the Ohio Senator's "bogus" response to a seemingly straightforward question during a campaign event.

The late-night host labeled former president Donald Trump’s running mate Vance's answer as the "worst possible response" to the simple query, “What makes you smile?”

JD Vance's response when asked what 'makes him happy'

“You have been criticized as being a little too serious, a little angry sometimes. What makes you smile? What makes you happy?” asked Fox 2 Detroit's Charlie Langton on Wednesday, August 7.

“Well, I smile at a lot of things including bogus questions from the media, man,” replied Vance before bursting into laughter.

“I mean, look, I think if you watch, if you watch a full speech that I give, I actually, I’m having a good time out here and I’m enjoying this. But, look, sometimes you got to take the good with the bad. And right now, I am angry about what Kamala Harris has done to this country and done to the American southern border,” he added.

John Oliver asks whether JD Vance is alright after his response

John Oliver was quick to question JD Vance’s mental state after viewing the clip. “Is he all right?” the host asked incredulously. “He just got asked what makes you smile, a question to which there is almost no wrong answer. You can say my kids, dogs that sleep weird, a warm bath, dogs that sleep weird, Cheez-It, which is incidentally also the name of this dog that sleeps weird,” he said.

Oliver criticized Vance for missing a chance to provide a genuine and positive answer. He suggested several “good answers” to the question before dismissing Vance’s response on border security as “just plain wrong.”

John Oliver compares JD Vance to Tim Walz

To further his point, John Oliver compared JD Vance’s response to a clip of Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate and Minnesota Governir Tim Walz.

The clip showed Walz and his daughter Hope enjoying slingshot ride at the state fair and had moments like the Governor holding a piglet and being hugged by children after signing a law for free school meals.

Oliver highlighted these moments to illustrate how a genuine, joyful response could have been more fitting, quipping, “[And there’s] him here, seemingly remembering that he isn’t JD f**king Vance.”
