PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA: During a campaign event in Pennsylvania on Sunday, August 18, Vice President Kamala Harris faced mockery after she appeared to stumble through her remarks about the upcoming presidential election and the values the United States represents on the global stage.

The event, part of the Road to Chicago bus tour, also featured Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, along with Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Walz’s wife, Gwen Walz. The tour was intended to energize supporters ahead of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, which begins from Monday, August 19.

Yet another Kamala Harris 'word salad'?

At the event, Kamala Harris attempted to articulate what the 2024 election signifies for America, but her delivery failed to land. She rambled about the "duality to the nature of democracy," noting that democracy can be both incredibly strong and fragile.

“Our election is about understanding the importance of this beautiful country of ours in terms of what we stand for around the globe as a democracy,” Harris told the crowd. “As a democracy, we know, there’s a duality to the nature of democracy.”

“On the one hand, incredible strength when it is intact,” she said. “What it does for its people to protect and defend their rights, their liberty, their freedom. Incredibly strong, and incredibly fragile. It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it. And that's what this campaign is about."

The vice president continued by addressing what she perceived as a troubling trend in leadership.

"This campaign is about a recognition that, frankly, over the last several years there has been this kind of perversion that has taken place, I think. Which is to suggest, that the measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you beat down, when what we know is the real and true measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you lift up. That's what we see as strength," the vice president continued.

"Anybody who is about beating down other people is a coward! This is what strength looks like. So we know what we are about, we know what we stand for. And one of the beautiful things about these next 79 days is what the people in this room already have been doing and know. Let's build community, let's reinforce community," Harris added, as quoted by RealClearPolitics.

Kamala Harris mocked online as she explains dual nature of democracy

As expected, Kamala Harris’ speech was quickly labeled as another example of her tendency to deliver what some have called "word salads". Social media platforms were abuzz with commentary, much of it unflattering.

"Kamala Harris honestly sounds awful here. Always seems like she’s explaining SOMETHING to people who are having trouble understanding what she is saying, while she actually says NOTHING," one posted on X.

"Wow is this awful. Everything about it. Her. The set-up. The optics," another remarked.

"Unburdened by intelligence," a third user quipped.

"Kamala Harris, renowned philosopher, has added 'the duality of Democracy' to word salad greatist it hits. Possibly giving 'unburdened by what has been' and venn diagrams a run for their money for the top spot," someone else joked.

"Saying words with zero meaning. People need to think about what she’s actually saying here. Just recite the alphabet but use a soft tone. Wave your hands. That’s what she does," read a comment.

"Yes Kamala, democracy is incredibly fragile under government overreach, attacks on the SCOTUS, federal price caps, over-regulating businesses, censorship, gun confiscation, political lawfare, corrupted mainstream media, election coups, etc," another chimed in.

Kamala Harris' past gaffes

This incident is not the first time Kamala Harris has been accused of delivering confusing or awkward speeches. In March 2022, during a speech in Louisiana, she made headlines for her remarks on the "significance of the passage of time," a phrase that left many puzzled.

Similarly, during a visit to Poland, Harris stumbled over her words while discussing NATO's eastern flank, leading to further criticism.

“I am here, standing here on the northern flank, on the eastern flank, talking about what we have in terms of the eastern flank and our NATO allies, and what is at stake at this very moment,” Harris said at the time. “What is at stake this very moment are some of the guiding principles around the NATO alliance."

Most recently, Harris faced criticism for her comments on a prisoner swap with Russia.

“This is just an extraordinary testament to the importance of having a president who understands the power of diplomacy and understands the strength that rests in understanding the significance of diplomacy,” Harris said.
