Kamala Harris dubbed 'incapable' as Internet does not expect her to tackle border crisis if elected prez
WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden's abysmal performance at the first presidential debate of 2024 against presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump on June 27 has resulted in growing calls for him to step out of the race. As such the possibility of Vice President Kamala Harris stepping in to become the nominee for the Democratic Party has significantly increased.
According to Fox News, speculations have been rife over the subject, with discussion even incorporating chances of Biden stepping down from the top office even before the general election in November. In that case, Harris would be the automatic successor to the presidency.
The issue of border security and illegal immigration has plagued the Biden administration throughout their term, and whoever takes over the reins from the incumbent will be pushed to deal with it head-on. The number of illegal migrants encountered entering the United States has been record high since Biden took office and only dropped down in recent months, but the situation remains far from resolved.
Kamala Harris' stance on illegal immigration and border crisis
Harris would be "a voice of continuity for the current practices" of the Biden administration, according to a Fox News article. As the current VP, she has supported Biden's decision to roll back the border policies of former president Donald Trump.
She had called for a sweeping immigration bill which the administration introduced on day one. It includes significant reforms and funding measures, as well as a pathway to citizenship for undocumented migrants living in the country.
"Our immigration system has been broken for decades. That is why President Biden and I have spent the last three years putting forward solutions to fix it and address the root causes of migration," she had stated back in February.
Harris had also supported a bipartisan Senate package on the border issue, which ultimately failed to pass. Referring to the attempt, she noted in June, "We know that there was bipartisan work that happened, including involving some of the most conservative members of the United States Senate. A deal was reached, and they got a call from Donald Trump, who said, 'Don't put it for a vote.' Because Donald Trump would prefer to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem."
The Vice President had also taken the lead on policy matters, setting out in 2021 to lead a diplomatic outreach for tackling the "root causes" of migration from the neighboring states of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvadore, such as climate change, violence, poverty, and economic insecurity.
While she was dubbed as the "border czar" by political rivals for her efforts, she met with some success, as more than $5.2 billion was committed since May 2021 in private sector investments in the Northern Triangle countries, and encounters from those states dropped from over 700,000 in FY 21 to over 330,000 so far as of May.
Harris had suggested relying on executive actions to protect migrants, during her presidential campaign in 2021. After President Biden took executive action to protect some spouses of American citizens from deportation this year, the VP stated, "While today’s actions are a significant step forward, there is more work to be done to fix our broken immigration system. That includes the need for a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers. President Biden and I continue to call on the United States Congress to join us in acting by passing permanent protections for Dreamers."
