JD Vance claims Kamala Harris 'rebuffed' his family's request to tour VP residence before inauguration

WASHINGTON, DC: Former Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly denied JD Vance’s family a chance to tour the vice presidential residence before his inauguration.
Speaking on the debut episode of 'The Katie Miller Podcast', Vice President Vance shared that his wife and young children had hoped to visit their future home ahead of the move, but their request was turned down.
Vance described the refusal as a break from what he called customary protocol, saying that instead, he had to introduce his children to the residence using photos and a book.
JD Vance reveals Kamala Harris denied his family’s request to visit VP residence
Speaking on the debut episode of 'The Katie Miller Podcast', JD Vance described the refusal as a break from long-standing tradition. Harris, who often embraced the nickname “Momala” during her campaign, reportedly declined to give the Vance children an early look at the home they would soon move into.
“I think that, normally, it’s customary for the outgoing vice president to show the incoming vice president’s family the house,” Vance explained. “We have three little kids, so I guess at the time our kids were, like, 7, 5, and—you know—2. I guess Mirabel turned 3 right before the inauguration.”
According to Vance, his wife, Usha, was particularly eager for their children to see the residence in advance. “Usha really wanted to show [the children where they would be living], so what we actually proposed is—recognizing the weirdness of the politics—can Usha take the kids over and just show them where they’re going to be living for the next four years? And they were rebuffed,” he said.
How did JD Vance familiarize his children with the VP residence before the inauguration?

Although Harris declined the Vance family’s request to visit the vice president’s residence, Vance and his wife, Usha, still made an effort to familiarize their children with their future home.
Lacking the opportunity for an in-person tour, the couple turned to photos. “A friend of ours in Cincinnati had a book about the vice president’s residence, and so we would show the kids what it would look like, but that’s as close as they ever got to it,” Vance explained.
Harris also declined to invite Vance himself to the residence ahead of the inauguration, breaking with another long-standing tradition in the peaceful transfer of power. Typically, the outgoing vice president welcomes the incoming one for a brief visit—something Harris chose not to do.
This decision stands in contrast to the family-oriented image Harris has publicly embraced, particularly through her nickname “Momala,” a term affectionately coined by her stepchildren, Cole and Ella, after she married Doug Emhoff.
Harris shared the story behind the nickname in a 2019 Elle article for Mother’s Day, and it has since been widely cited to highlight her role as a devoted stepmother and supportive family figure throughout her political career.
Harris is yet to respond to Vance's claims.

Classless.
A user worried, "Small gestures like these build unity, but instead, we see division even in simple traditions. It’s painful watching leadership miss chances to bring people together."
