WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump defended the ongoing US military campaign against Iran on Tuesday, July 21, by comparing the conflict's death toll to previous American wars, arguing that the operation has resulted in significantly fewer military casualties than conflicts in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

His remarks, posted on Truth Social as Pentagon officials testified before Congress on the administration's military strategy, prompted criticism from several lawmakers.

The comments came a day before Trump is scheduled to attend a dignified transfer ceremony for US service members killed during the latest escalation with Iran.

Trump listed the duration and reported US military deaths from several major American conflicts, arguing that the current Iran campaign has resulted in significantly fewer casualties than previous wars.

"Afghanistan War: 20 years, 2,000 DEAD. Iraq War: 9 years, 4,600 DEAD. Vietnam War: 19 years and 5 months, 58,220 DEAD. Korean War: 3 years and 1 month, 36,574 DEAD. Venezuela War: 1 day, 0 DEAD. Iran Military Conflict: 4 months, 18 DEAD."

Trump referred to the operation against former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro as the "Venezuela War" but described the fighting with Iran as the "Iran Military Conflict."

The president did not cite sources for the figures, though they broadly align with Defense Department casualty data. The Defense Casualty Analysis System, however, does not classify the Venezuela operation as a war.

Lawmakers condemn Trump's Iran conflict remarks

Trump's remarks immediately drew criticism from several lawmakers, who questioned his characterization of the casualties.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on X, "Bragging about 'only' 18 brave US service members being killed in a reckless and illegal war he started is beneath contempt and a new low even for the likes of Donald Trump."

Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene also criticized the president's comments, posting, "Trump is bragging about killing 18 US soldiers. Thats how I read this stupid posts. The 'peace president' went to war and is killing and wounding our troops."

California Governor Gavin Newsom also condemned Trump's comments, writing, "Donald Trump is a disgusting Little Man! Treat our brave American soldiers with some respect."

The exchange came as the Pentagon confirmed that Army Sgt Angel S Rampersad, who had previously been listed as missing, is now believed to have been killed following Iran's ballistic missile and drone attack on a US base in Jordan.

His death raised the number of US troops killed in that attack to three. Another American service member was killed days later during the controlled detonation of an Iranian drone in Iraq, bringing the total number of US military deaths since the conflict began to 18, according to Pentagon figures.
