NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: New York Governor Kathy Hochul appeared on MS Now’s 'Good Morning Joe' on Thursday, January 8, to discuss her approach to ICE officials in her state, in light of the recent shooting in Minneapolis.
Hochul admitted while speaking to Joe Scarborough that she once harassed a federal immigration agent who was allegedly trying to go after the people of New York, adding that the killing of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent made her reevaluate the policies in her own state.
Kathy Hochul slams Trump administration’s lawlessness
When Joe Scarborough asked the Governor of New York about the recent shooting in Minneapolis, Kathy Hochul criticized the Trump administration for spreading fear and lawlessness.
She said it was how the administration operated and that they wanted democratically-led cities to be out of control, so that they could step in and save them. She added that New York’s crime rate had gone down, that 60% murders and 60% shootings had been down.
“Subways have never been this safe,” she added.
Hochul praised New York for being safe, and while she admitted that they had a long way to go, given the big population, she said that they had been actively discrediting the Trump administration’s claims that it had been “descending into hell,” and that the city needed saving.
Hochul added that she spoke to Trump fairly regularly and knew that Zohran Mamdani wanted to build a relationship with him, which she hoped would help avoid the arrival of more ICE agents and National Guard members in New York.
“And what happened, I am so sickened as a mom that there’s a child that woke up yesterday, a six-year-old, who had a loving mother, and goes to bed an orphan,” Hochul said.
The governor added that a new policy was set to be implemented in New York that would help tackle the problem and would be announced next week.
Donald Trump defends ICE agent
President Donald Trump took to social media to react to the recent shooting in Minneapolis and also spoke to the New York Post about the incident. He told the publication that he had watched the clip of the shooting and called it a “terrible scene.”
He said that it was horrible to watch and that he hated to see how the scene unfolded. However, he stood by the ICE official who had opened fire. The president said that he wielded his weapon after being run over by Good’s car.
“She behaved horribly,” he added.
