WASHINGTON, DC: Kellyanne Conway called out Democrats for skipping President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 24. It is expected that more than 70 Democratic members of Congress will not attend the event.

According to Conway, ignoring what she described as a "constitutionally mandated event” is equivalent to “making a scene”.

During a panel on Fox News' 'The FIVE,' the former Trump adviser said, “This is the modern Democratic Party everyone. Where are the pro-lifers, where are the pro-Second Amendment ones, who voted for a tax cut, who's for de-reg, energy dominance, who's applauding lower crime in their cities and states because of President Trump's policies?”

The 59-year-old political consultant further claimed that Democrats are “against all of that by way of not showing up. The modern Democratic Party is to protest, perform and then post it.”

“Taking a stand is different than making a scene. You said earlier they're acting like children -- that's really mean to children,” Conway added.

Democrats reject in-person attendance at Trump address

Conway’s remarks came after reports indicated that dozens of Democrats are expected to skip the State of the Union address, with many planning counter-events in opposition to the Republican leader’s speech.

Representative Sean Casten (D-IL) said earlier, “My respect for the office of the President of the United States cannot abide the disrespect that Donald Trump shows to that office every day.”

“As such, while I will watch the State of the Union elsewhere, I will not attend in person, as I am not interested in being used as a prop for his theatrics,” he added.

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark also joined Casten in announcing that she will not attend the event in person.

She, however, said she will be “hearing from the people of my district about their personal experiences with skyrocketing costs, new barriers to health care, dismantled Social Security services, and brutal cuts to medical research.”

Lawmakers join anti-Trump ‘State of the Swamp’ events

In addition, two counterprogramming events, the 'State of the Swamp' and the 'People’s State of the Union', have been organized in response to Trump’s address.

Representatives Yassamin Ansari (AZ), Becca Balint (VT), Greg Casar (TX), Veronica Escobar (TX), Pramila Jayapal (WA), Delia Ramirez (IL), and Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ) are expected to attend the 'State of the Swamp' at the DC National Press Club.

Senator Ron Wyden (OR), along with Representatives Jason Crow (CO), Seth Moulton (MA), Dan Goldman (NY), Eric Swalwell (CA), and Eugene Vindman (VA), are reportedly set to attend the 'People’s State of the Union' on the National Mall.
