BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS: A man has escaped from custody in Boston after being charged with killing his girlfriend and hiding her body in a car at the airport while he fled to Kenya.

The Associated Press reports that on Wednesday, February 7, afternoon, a man identified himself as Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe's attorney and asked to speak with him at the Nairobi police station.

Kevin Kangethe escaped police custody

“The officers agreed to his request and removed the prisoner from the cells and took him to (an) office … leaving them there. After a short while the prisoner escaped by running away and left the (lawyer) behind,” according to the reports obtained by Associated Press.

Senior police officers were coincidentally holding a meeting/lecture with all the anti-crime personnel at the time of the escape.

Walking back into the room and finding the lawyer alone, the officers manning the fugitive claimed to have realized Kangethe had escaped.

The officers chasing him shouted at Kangethe as he leaped onto a matatu that was at the bus stop and ordered the driver to take off, The Star's  report suggested.

Police tried to catch up with him, but they were unable. According to the report, John Maina Ndegwa, the purported lawyer, was taken into custody.

Kengethe allegedly leaped into a privately owned minivan, according to Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei. “We have arrested the officers who were on duty when he escaped to explain how it happened. It is just embarrassing to us,” he remarked.

Kevin Kangethe accused of killing Margaret Mbitu

In accordance with CrimeOnline, Kangethe is accused in Boston of killing Margaret Mbitu on October 31, 2023. He was held in Kenya pending the outcome of his extradition case.

On October 30, Mbitu was last observed leaving her Halifax, Massachusetts, job as a health care aide. Kengethe lived in Lowell, and it is said that she went there with him.

On November 1, she was discovered in Kengethe's vehicle in the main parking garage of Boston Logan International Airport. Her face, neck, and side were all lacerated. On January 30, the suspect was taken into custody at a nightclub in Nairobi.

The AP was informed by a police official that Kengethe's decision to renounce his US citizenship was the reason for the extradition delay. The bond decision was anticipated from the judge on Friday, February 9.
