Khloe Kardashian honored Mary Jo 'MJ' Shannon, writing, 'My sweet MJ,' and thanking her for showing that 'love is the greatest legacy'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Media personality Khloe Kardashian is paying tribute to her grandmother, Mary Jo 'MJ' Shannon, three days after businesswoman Kris Jenner announced her mother's death at the age of 91 on Thursday, July 16.

Khloe shared an emotional Instagram carousel reflecting on MJ’s enduring legacy, the values and life lessons she passed down, and the lasting impact she had on generations of the Kardashian-Jenner family.

In a July 19 Instagram post, the 42-year-old Good American founder shared photos of herself with her grandmother over the years alongside a heartfelt message honoring MJ’s life. “My sweet MJ,” she wrote.

She continued, “Thank you for showing us that life is meant to be celebrated, that laughter is healing, and that love is the greatest legacy we can leave behind. You lived so fully, so gracefully, and so beautifully.”

She further reflected on the values MJ instilled in her family, writing, “You taught us that love never leaves. It lives on in the family you built, the traditions we’ll continue, the stories we’ll tell, and every time we choose joy. Your love will forever be woven into who we are.”

Khloe also thanked her grandmother “for every lesson, every laugh, every embrace, and every piece of your heart you gave so freely,” adding, “You were truly one of one.”

The reality star also shared a personal message about her late father, Robert Kardashian, writing, “I know Heaven welcomed you with open arms, surrounded by everyone who has been waiting to see you again. And I know you kept your promise telling my daddy just how deeply we love him and how much we miss him.”

Khloe concluded by remembering MJ’s younger daughter, Karen Houghton, who died in March 2024, and her late third husband, Harry Shannon. “I know you’re happy having your Coke, tuna sandwich and graham crackers with Papa Harry while Karen dances around you. Until we meet again, my sweet MJ! I love you.”

Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian share tributes to Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon

Kris Jenner was the first to announce her mother’s death on July 16. “Today, we said goodbye to my beautiful Mommy MJ,” she wrote on Instagram, adding, “There are no words that could ever capture what she has meant to me or the heartbreak of having to say goodbye."

She continued, "My mom was the heart of our family. She taught me everything that truly matters … to love your family fiercely, to be kind, to show up for the people you love, and to never take a single moment together for granted.” 

Kris added that her mother “taught us that family is everything,” and praised her resilience, faith, and unconditional love. She said she would miss their daily conversations, smile, and laughter while finding comfort in knowing that “love like yours never truly leaves us.”

Kim Kardashian also honored her grandmother in an emotional Instagram tribute, calling MJ “my best friend, my gossip buddy, my forever twin.”

“You taught all of us the importance of family, and those values are something we’ll carry with us forever,” Kim wrote. She also credited MJ, who founded the San Diego children's boutique Shannon & Co in 1980, with teaching her “what it meant to be a hardworking businesswoman.”
