NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: What was supposed to be a huge celebration of the New York Knicks’ return to the NBA Finals turned into chaos on Monday, June 8, as angry fans clashed with police in Midtown Manhattan after the team’s Game 3 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs defeated the Knicks 115-111 at Madison Square Garden, seizing a pivotal lead in the championship series despite a late rally from New York star Jalen Brunson. Rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama had a number of big baskets down the stretch to quiet the Garden crowd and ruin what many fans hoped would be a historic home win.

Crowd disorder erupts at Bryant Park watch party after final buzzer

Thousands of fans had gathered at a Bryant Park watch party after heightened security measures surrounding President Donald Trump's attendance at Madison Square Garden prevented large crowds from assembling near the venue.

As the final buzzer sounded and disappointment spread through the crowd, videos posted across social media showed tensions escalating rapidly.

Video circulating online showed large groups of fans climbing NYPD barricades, tearing down street signs, and throwing objects in the street as police struggled to contain the swelling crowd.

Several videos appeared to show physical fights breaking out among fans on nearby streets.

One widely circulated clip appears to show a man being repeatedly struck with a detached bus stop sign during a fight on 42nd Street.

Another video showed fans jumping on police vehicles and chanting loudly and surging through barricaded areas as officers tried to restore order.

As the situation escalated, NYPD officers deployed pepper spray to disperse sections of the crowd.

Authorities had not immediately announced any injuries linked to the unrest, though social media videos showed multiple individuals being detained by police.

The disturbances followed reports that more than 20 arrests were made after a similar watch party following Game 2.

Sports, security and politics collide in Manhattan

The chaotic scenes underscored the unusual combination of factors surrounding Game 3.

With Trump attending the game at Madison Square Garden, security around the arena was significantly tighter than normal and fans faced long lines to enter.

Large public gatherings that might ordinarily form around the venue were redirected elsewhere, helping turn Bryant Park into the focal point for thousands of fans hoping to experience the game together.

As emotions intensified during the close contest, the crowd's mood shifted dramatically following Knicks' defeat.

For city officials, the disorder presents another challenge as New York prepares for additional Finals games that could draw even larger crowds.

For Knicks fans, meanwhile, the focus quickly returns to the court, where the team now faces mounting pressure to rebound and keep its championship hopes alive.
