WASHINGTON, DC: Democratic Rep LaMonica McIver triggered widespread outrage after a heated exchange with ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons during a House hearing this week.

Her religiously charged questions quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from conservatives and Republicans who accused her of crossing a line.

The exchange took place during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on February 10, where Democrats repeatedly criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement and President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda.

Lawmakers also highlighted the recent deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both killed during altercations with federal immigration agents in Minneapolis in recent weeks.

McIver escalated the hearing when she asked Lyons, “How do you think Judgment Day will work for you with so much blood on your hands?” Lyons declined to answer, saying, “I’m not going to entertain that question.”

McIver pressed further, replying, “Of course not,” before asking, “Do you think you’re going to hell?”

The remarks immediately caused visible discomfort in the room. Fox News congressional correspondent Bill Melugin said audible groans could be heard following McIver’s comments.

House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Andrew Garbarino intervened and reminded members of the committee’s “standards of decorum.” McIver pushed back, responding, “Mr Chairman, I’m just asking a question. You guys are always talking about religion and the Bible.”

Lyons did not respond further to the line of questioning.

Conservatives blast LaMonica McIver as backlash grows

Clips of the exchange quickly spread online, where conservatives condemned McIver’s remarks as inappropriate and extreme.

Conservative commentator Nick Sortor wrote, “Why the HELL hasn’t she been kicked off her committees??!” The Trump War Room account labeled McIver “deranged,” adding, “What a freak!” America First New Jersey Chairman Mike Crispi called the exchange “a low point in Congressional history,” while commentator Dave Rubin said, “This woman is completely bonkers, even for a Democrat.”

The backlash intensified as critics pointed to McIver’s ongoing legal case. The New Jersey congresswoman is facing a three-count federal indictment tied to a May 9, 2025, incident at the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark. She is accused of interfering with ICE officers during the incident.

RedState writer Bonchie asked, “Isn’t this the lady who’s charged with assaulting federal agents?” Townhall writer Amy Curtis said, “These people are vile.” Republican Sen Jim Banks added, “ICE Derangement Syndrome is a real thing in today’s Democratic Party.”
