Lara Trump accuses Green Day of caving in to 'corporate agenda' over 'American Idiot' lyric change
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: Green Day's frontman Billie Joe Armstrong stirred up headlines on New Year's Eve with his performance of 'American Idiot' on 'Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve'.
During the performance, he altered the lyrics from "not part of the redneck agenda" to "not part of the MAGA agenda."
Lara Trump says Green Day is 'not punk rock'
In response, The Independent reported that Lara Trump, who has a background in television production and is married to Eric Trump, criticized the band's performance.
She asserted that Green Day was "not punk rock" and accused them of being influenced by a "corporate political agenda," the clash of musical expression and political commentary continuing to spark discussions.
Lara Trump, a former television producer, occasional singer and wife of Eric Trump, the third child of the former president, expressed her opinion that the rocker "couldn't help himself" and felt the need to become more socially aware or "woke".
Commenting on Green Day's New Year's Eve performance on Ryan Seacrest's New Year's Rockin' Eve, she criticized Billie Joe Armstrong's alteration of the lyrics to 'American Idiot'.
'These are the people who are supposed to be anti-establishment'
Furthermore, Lara Trump asseted on her show 'The Right View', “These people are so controlled by the mainstream, they are so controlled by the corporate political agenda.”
Lara Trump also brought up the controversy surrounding award-winning singer-songwriter Neil Young, who removed his music from Spotify recently.
Neil Young's decision was attributed to the platform's association with Joe Rogan, whose content had faced accusations of spreading disinformation about Covid-19 and the vaccine.
Lara Trump found irony in the situation, stating, "It is so funny to me… because these are the people who are supposed to be anti-establishment. These are the people who are supposed to be the rockers that we look to, like, fight back against 'The Man"'.
"They are in lock step with 'The Man.' It is amazing to see," she added.
As per OK Magazine, Green Day's performance with the altered lyrics to 'American Idiot' has been a consistent feature since 2016, accompanied by several political statements against Donald Trump on live TV.
In a notable instance at the 2016 American Music Awards, Billie Joe chanted the lyrics "No Trump, No KKK, No fascist USA" during their performance of the song 'BANG BANG!'
This chant served as a response to the MAGA white power rallies occurring at the time, showcasing the band's outspoken political stance. Meanwhile, Tom Morello, the guitarist of Rage Against the Machine, known for their politically charged music, expressed support for Green Day's performance, taking a dig at Fox News' coverage of the band.
