WASHINGTON, DC: After the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn, came under fire for his comments in which he expressed his wish for the former president to be an "actual martyr"," as reported by the New York Post.
In an attempt to defuse his controversial remarks last week at the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference, the Democratic super-donor posted on X that he and tech entrepreneur friend Peter Thiel had a falling out over a "moral issue" — Thiel's support of Trump, as Puck News reports.
Reid Hoffman tries to gloss over his comment wishing Donald Trump was an ‘actual martyr’
Speaking up during the panel, Thiel mockingly thanked Hoffman for funding litigation against Trump, claiming that the 45th president had become a "martyr" due to the legal action.
Hoffman replied, "Yeah, I wish I had made him an actual martyr."
Hoffman addressed his comments in light of the attempted assassination of Trump on July 13, during a campaign event in Pennsylvania. He expressed his shock and sadness over the shooting and wished Trump a speedy recovery.
Hoffman posted on X, "Peter Thiel said that my lawsuit work against Trump was ‘turning a clown into a martyr.’ In that context, I replied that I wished that Trump would martyr himself — meaning let himself be held accountable."
First and everything: There is no place for political violence in our society. Assassination is not only categorically wrong, but is also the assassination of democracy. It is abhorrent that anyone has tried to assassinate President Trump. Everyone, on all sides of this…

He added, "Of course, I meant nothing about any sort of physical harm or violence, which I categorically deplore."
Internet rips Reid Hoffman for wishing Donald Trump was an 'actual martyr'
Several internet users ripped Reid Hoffman due to earlier remarks expressing his desire for former president Donald Trump to be an "actual martyr."
An internet user said, "If there is any justice left in the world, this guy will pay a heavy financial price" and "Ever since Trump came down the elevator in 2015, the Left has relentlessly vilified him. And, of course, Trump fights back hard & is vilified even more. These donors should be ashamed of themselves, but they have no shame."
One user wrote, "They have no shame, but they have deep pockets to settle lawsuits against them for their vile, reprehensible, and despicable comments. Let them be forced to put their money where their mouth is" while one added, "Shame on him! It's this kind of rhetoric that gives fuel to mentally ill individuals to take action. Let's start acting in a mature manner."
Another one stated, "A service like Indeed and politics don’t mix well so I opted out some time ago. No need for the kind of people that run it in my life. Hope they go broke somehow" whereas one mentioned, "Busted. Hoffman is expressing the sentiment of tens of millions of 'Americans'. Hopefully, a new FBI under President Trump will crack down on progressive madrassahs that radicalize our youth."
