ALABAMA, BIRMINGHAM: Mahogany Jackson, a mother from Alabama, was discovered shot in the back of the head on February 26 by the side of a road in a secluded area of Birmingham, Alabama, according to Birmingham Police Department.
Jackson had texted her mother a few hours earlier, claiming to have been abducted and pleading for assistance.
Six suspects face several charges
At a preliminary hearing on Wednesday morning, March 13, six of the seven suspects charged in relation to the kidnapping and killing of 20-year-old Jackson appeared in court.
Jackson was shot at least once and was found dead in an unauthorized landfill in southwest Birmingham on February 26.
Francis Harris, 25, Jeremiah McDowell, 18, and Brandon Pope, 24, have been charged with capital murder during a kidnapping and capital murder during sodomy, according to AL.com.
Blair Green, 25, Si'Niya McCall, 23, and Giovannie Clapp, 23, are all charged with felony sodomy, kidnapping, and murder. Teja Lewis, 26, is also charged with felony murder.
In addition, Lewis and Clapp face assault charges for giving Jackson a pistol whip.
Mahogany Jackson was taken to multiple locations during her kidnapping
A portion of Jackson's torture was captured on camera, according to Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond. He claimed that the investigation and the charges the suspects are facing were greatly influenced by the video.
Thurmond stated that Jackson was taken to several locations both during her kidnapping and before she was shot to death, even though the police are not disclosing the details of the attack to protect Jackson's family.
“It was absolutely disgusting,” Thurmond said.
“The actions displayed by these defendants were barbaric and have no place in society,’’ said Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr, before adding, “The senseless and inhumane treatment perpetuated on young Mahogany Jackson was very disturbing and violent.”
McDowell, McCall, and Lewis were all booked into jail on Wednesday afternoon. There are currently four that are not reserved.
