NEW YORK, NY: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued a public appeal for residents to show respect toward the New York Police Department following the release of viral videos from Washington Square Park.

The footage, recorded after a historic blizzard in the Northeast, shows crowds throwing snowballs at officers stationed in the area.

In a statement posted to X, Mayor Mamdani highlighted the efforts of city workers during the winter storm. “Officers, like all city workers, have been out in a historic blizzard, keeping New Yorkers safe and cars moving,” the Mayor stated. He concluded his message by asserting, “If anyone’s catching a snowball, it’s me.”

Violent encounters caught on viral video

The videos from Washington Square Park quickly circulated online, depicting individuals throwing snowballs at several officers. One specific clip shows an officer sustaining a cut above his eye during the confrontation.

While the footage captures officers pushing some offenders into the snow, initial reports indicate that no arrests were made at the scene.

The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the treatment of law enforcement during emergency weather events.

Mayor Mamdani emphasized that respect for city employees is paramount, especially when they are tasked with maintaining public safety under difficult environmental conditions.

Police Commissioner vows criminal investigation

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch has taken a firm stance on the matter, labeling the behavior of those involved as "disgraceful" and "criminal."

Tisch confirmed that NYPD detectives are currently aware of the videos and have launched an official investigation into the incident.

“Our detectives are investigating this matter,” Tisch stated in a social media update. The department is looking to identify those who attacked the officers, as the Commissioner emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated.

Historic blizzard strains city resources

The confrontation occurred as New York City continues to grapple with the aftermath of a massive winter storm.

City workers across various departments have been deployed around the clock to clear roads and ensure that transportation remains functional for residents.

Despite the strain on city resources, officials are focused on both recovery efforts and the ongoing criminal probe. The Mayor’s office has reiterated that maintaining a safe environment for all city workers remains a top priority during this recovery phase.
