BRONX, NEW YORK: The mother of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong could soon travel from Ghana to the United States after President Donald Trump agreed to grant her a visa, according to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani announced the development on Saturday, October 31, after speaking with Trump about the teenager’s death.

Javits was fatally shot on Thursday, October 29, while walking to school near East 171st Street and Crotona Place. His death has left his family devastated, with his mother mourning from Ghana and members of the Bronx community gathering to support his older brother.

Mamdani shared the update after speaking with Trump, saying the president had agreed to grant Javits’ mother a visa so she could travel to New York and be with her family.

The mayor also addressed the pain of the teenager’s mother being thousands of miles away during such a difficult time. “The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away,” Mamdani wrote.

Emotional footage shared on social media showed Javits’ mother grieving her son while still in Ghana.

Javits had moved to the United States from Ghana about a year ago. He was 15 and reportedly dreamed of becoming a doctor.

Bronx community rallies around Javits Frimpong’s family

While the family waits for Javits’ mother to travel to New York, people in the Bronx have come together to remember the teenager and support his loved ones.

A vigil was held for Javits, with supporters gathering around his older brother. The gathering brought together people who wanted to show the family that they were not alone in their grief.

The tragedy also drew a connection to another young Bronx victim. Leandra Feliz, the mother of Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz, reportedly attended the vigil. Junior was also 15 when he was killed in 2018.

Her presence offered support to a family now facing a loss similar to the one she experienced.

A Boogie Wit da Hoodie and Michael Blackson pay tribute to Javits Frimpong

Tributes to Javits also came from beyond the neighborhood. Bronx rapper A Boogie Wit da Hoodie paused his 10th anniversary concert on Friday night to ask the audience to observe a moment of silence for the teenager.

Comedian Michael Blackson, who was born in Ghana, also spoke about Javits’ death. He reflected on his own experiences as a young African immigrant in the United States, including the bullying he faced while adjusting to life in a new country.

His comments brought attention to concerns raised by Javits’ father, Thomas Frimpong, who said his son had experienced bullying at school.

However, police have not established a motive for the shooting, and authorities have not confirmed whether bullying played any role in Javits’ death.
