WASHINGTON, DC: A man allegedly drove his car onto a sidewalk near the White House and repeatedly demanded to speak to President Donald Trump, triggering a major law enforcement response in Washington on Saturday, September 19.

The incident unfolded around noon near the security barrier at the corner of 16th Street and H Street at Lafayette Square.

According to the information provided, the man allegedly drove onto the sidewalk near the security barrier before demanding that he speak with Trump as officers arrested him.

The incident reportedly prompted a rapid response from Secret Service officers, Metropolitan Police Department personnel and members of the military. The man was reportedly unaware that Trump was away at Camp David at the time.

A Secret Service spokesperson said surrounding roads were shut down “out of an abundance of caution” while officers dealt with the situation.

The agency also said a sweep of the vehicle did not turn up anything.

“We appreciate the swift actions of our Secret Service Police Officers and are grateful for the Metropolitan Police Department for their prompt response,” the Secret Service said.

The man was then taken to a nearby hospital for a “mental health evaluation,” according to the Secret Service spokesperson.

White House security response unfolds in Lafayette Square

The incident comes as another reminder of the security challenges around the White House, where even a vehicle approaching the area can quickly trigger a major law enforcement response.

In October 2025, a driver in a grey Acura was arrested after allegedly trying to smash through a security gate outside the White House while Trump was inside the executive mansion.

Another driver was detained in March after allegedly driving a van through a temporary security barricade at Madison Place and H Street Northwest near Lafayette Park.

Donald Trump faces security threats

The latest incident also comes against the backdrop of several security threats involving Trump during his presidency and the 2024 campaign.

On April 25, 2026, California schoolteacher Cole Allen, 31, allegedly opened fire one floor above the grand ballroom at the Washington Hilton while the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was taking place.

Allen allegedly struck the bulletproof vest of a Secret Service agent, who returned fire but missed. Allen is now in federal custody awaiting trial.

Trump also survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024, when Thomas Matthew Crooks allegedly opened fire.
