Mariah Carey voices disappointment over Rock & Roll Hall of Fame snub: ‘My lawyer got in before me’
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Mariah Carey is expressing her thoughts on narrowly missing induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The iconic singer, known for hits like 'We Belong Together', was nominated for this year’s Hall of Fame alongside Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, and Mary J Blige. However, when the inductees were announced in April, Carey was left off the list.
Mariah Carey reflects on Rock & Roll Hall of Fame snub
According to the US Weekly, in a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, published on October 30, Carey shared her disappointment about the snub. “My thoughts are: I didn’t get in,” she admitted when asked about her feelings on the matter.
She recounted the excitement leading up to the announcement, saying, “Everybody was calling me going, ‘I think you’re getting in!’ and so I was excited about it. But then it didn’t happen.” With her signature humor, she added, “My lawyer got into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before me.”
Carey was referring to her entertainment lawyer, Allen Grubman, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022 as a recipient of the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which honors non-performers who have significantly impacted the music industry. Grubman has represented numerous major artists, including Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Jennifer Lopez.
Mariah Carey addresses Grammy snubs
In the same interview, Mariah Carey reflected on her Grammy history, revealing that she has won only five awards throughout her illustrious career. “They gave me two Grammys when I first started out,” she recalled.
“Then one year — huge year for me, career-wise — I had like six nominations with the 'Daydream' album and ‘One Sweet Day’ and ‘Always Be My Baby’ and ‘Fantasy'. All those songs in a row ended up being so big that you just thought, ‘OK, at least 'One Sweet Day' is gonna win best duet or something.’ Then I sat there the whole time and I didn’t get anything. I was like, This is not fun. But what can I do? Be a sore loser and say, ‘F the Grammys?’” She lightheartedly concluded, “Whatever. If they give me more Grammys, I’ll like them more.”
Carey recently discussed her Grammy record on the October 16 episode of the 'Las Culturistas' podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. She won her first two Grammys in 1991 for Best New Artist and Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for 'Vision of Love'. Her next Grammy wins came in 2006 for 'We Belong Together' and for Best Contemporary R&B Album for 'The Emancipation of Mimi'.
Reflecting on her 1997 album, 'Butterfly', she remarked, “They scammed me. They toy with me,” expressing surprise that the album received “zero accolades.”
